just a simple question, i stumbled upon.
what happens when a unit which hits automatically targets a unit with cover, hard to hit, steam, etc?

i guess that to hit automatically means to have a 1+ to hit roll. therefore a automatically hit will get modified to 2+, 3+ etc.. but that is just a guess, would be interesting to know how you handle it and why it is not routed in the core rules.

What units hit automatically? Having a 1+ To Hit is not the same as hitting automatically.

Crossed Tremor Cannons, Warp Missile, maybe some combination from "Doom" and other hit modifiers.

Oh right, I forgot about those (except for the Warp Missile). I would guess that "automatic" means just that, regardless of To Hit modifiers.
