Hi all, semi new to the game and I cannot seem to find an answer to my question anywhere.

The rules regarding elites are pretty straight forward regarding the reroll but then it gets very vague.

It seems as if the selective pinning might mean that an elite stand surrounded by 4 non-elites could choose to only fight one of the stands in the CC phase and leave the other 3 sitting.

How should I 'REALLY' be reading this rule?

Selective pinning allow the elite stand to choose in wich order they will fight.

If the elite stand is surrounded by 4 enemy stands, he will fight the 4 stands but will choose wich opponent it will fight first, then next stand, etc...until it dies or until victory.

Example:

A close combar terminator stand (CAF +8 & elite) is engaged in CC by 1 ogryn stand (CAF +6) and 3 IG tactical stands (CAF +0).
As the IG troops are outnumbering the SM stand, they normally could decide wich stand will start fighting first. But as the terminator stand is Elite, SM player decides to fight first the ogryn stand then tactical stands. If the termi stand was not Elite, IG player should have choose to play 1 or 2 rounds of CC with standard IG troop than with the cc bonus dice(s) play the ogryn stand.

Hope this help :)

Edit: I think the Elite rule should be globally reworded. The tiny resume is not clear enough to be easily understooden. Maybe at one example could be added. We aleady discussed this point, maybe it's already done ;)

The only addition/change I have for Elite so far is:

Pg 41 - Special Ability: Elite - last sentence, change "In addition, each Elite unit…." to "In addition, each Elite detachment…"

There is also another benefit of being Elite for Selective Pinning.  If an Elite unit is moving into base to base contact with an enemy detachment it does not have to engage the closest stand, so it can ignore closer stands to pick out command stands or the like.

Nice, that'll come in handy for my Exarchs.

Case 1:

So if an Elite namned "1" is surrounded by nr 2,3 & 4.  Nr 2 is also an elite.

Can the attacker and owner if 2-4  choose to start with 3 or 4 or is the fight order still in nr 1´s power.

Case 2:
If nr 1 is charged by 3 other elites can nr 1 still dictate everything or can owner of 2-4 then decide who will start?

I'd say:

In any CC involving 2 or more Elite opponents, the "CC resolution order" is decided by the opponents having the outnumbering stands.

1 Elite Vs 1 Elite + 1 standard stand -> Elite resolution order is cancelled or you could decide this with a dice roll.
1 Elite Vs 2 or more Elite -> Elite resolution order is cancelled and the player with 2 or more stands can decide who will start fighting

We usually pick who fights first in initiative order. It's a bit more complex so you have to keep track of who fought who but you can do that by marking them with dice and being sure orders are removed when they fight. The Elite ability will make this even more deadly but I think I'm more likely to forget to play it.

If it's just one on one combat across the board then it's just a case of starting from left to right for speed.

I'd agree with this.

Thanks guys for answers. Perhaps a small change in the wording in the rulebook? For me this is not that clear in the Netepic 5.

Special Ability: Elite
These are the best fighters in your army. In Close Combat, Elite units are assigned against enemy troops
last and may engage in selective pinning. This means a unit of Elite troops does not have to engage all models in a
unit before it can gang up on one or more models. In essence they may pick and choose which stands they may
engage while ignoring others.
