How do people play this?  And is there a rule for this, even an implied one?

We usually place the troops behind the transports* that they're in because:

1. we haven't colour coded troops and transport to match them up;
2. we can't remember which transport holds which troops;
3. occasionally some transports might contain 1 stand, and others 2, in the same detachment, usually due to losses

*except we usually hide any troops in drop pods or flyers, for a surprise.

It's also complicated, as a regular opponent might know your colour scheme.  And you not know his.

It didn't used to matter much in Space Marine, as troops almost always got out before firing began; but with Snap Fire the best targets are always picked out (always Devastators from a battle company, for instance).

Hi!

There is no hard and fast rule for this. I do it the same way you do, placing the carried troops behind the transport.

In some cases I have seen people roll randomly at the detachment when the amount of cargo is not similar, to avoid unrealistic singling out of transport with different cargo.

Sounds like a great idea.. Will try it with my friends...

hmm.. I think we've done that as well, come to think of it.

Maybe for similar transport detachments, we could insist on shooting at the nearest of them 1st.  Though it won't protect Termies, or any other stuff in different transports.

Hi!

If transports are the same and the cargo is the same there is no problem.

I guess, from what I have seen the "random" approach is best when they do differ.

Its the simplest "most fair" way to do it.

Eh?  Does that mean something? ???  I'm not always so good with pithy phases.

Anyway, I appreciate the answers, Primarch.  I wasn't really expecting a set rule.  Random will probably be the way we go.

Nothing clever......I tell my opponent exactly what is in each transport.

Hi!

But after telling do you letting him choose or roll to see which one to hit?

Primarch

He can choose.  In practice he'll only ever get a snapfire shot and only on the first turn so it's rarely a big deal.
