Hi there, I know the Netepic rules allow for the use of both the old square 2nd edition bases and the new long thin bases. I like the look of the old bases better, but tactically what is the difference between he two? I was wondering if I should put my close combat troops on the long bases since then they can engage more than one stand. What are the advantages to the different bases, and which troops benefit from the old style and which from the new? Thanks Christof |

Hi! I like the old bases too, but its just a matter of taste. From a mechanics pint of view there is not much difference since they both can be assaulted by one stand per side. I am note sure if one or another can fit more under a barrage attack. I think the differences are negligible. Primarch |

The rectangular bases have a slightly larger surface area, meaning they should be slightly less vulnerable to barrages (you need to cover more area to get a hit). However, the difference is so negligible as to make no practical difference. I use both styles of base (I actually prefer the look of the newer bases - more 'skirmsh'-style - but I can't always get enough of them ![]() |

Not a play advantage, but the plastic figures released during E40K and re-issued in Armageddon just dont fit into the old square bases. This can be a major drag if you have to trim the bases of 150 infantrymen because your army is square based. I use Rectangular for some armies, Square bases for others, and occassionally a mix. I too have (eventually) come to appreciate the aesthetics of the rectangular bases. However, I do find square bases are more effective in play for a number of reasons. The main one is once you hit 4000 points or so it can be darned hard to fit an army full of rectangle based troops on the table without massive artillery drawing clumping. They also fit poorly in the old style buildings and it can be harder to engage in effective Close Combat sometimes if thing are crowded. Overall though, it's not all that big a deal one way or the other. One upside if you dont use the optional ZoC rules is you could block off an area easier with the rectangles I suppose. |
