Post subject:  Help me choose my first army
Hi there,

I am getting into to epic and I need some help deciding what to buy.

I will be playing wither the 2nd edition space marine rules or the Netepic rules. I am buying two space marine armies.

My first question is, what is a good points level to shoot for for an average length game. What I mean is, say for example in Warhammer 40k you usually try to collect 2000 pts initially which ends up being a decent sized battle that lasts two hours. I want to know what the average point level is for Epic 2nd edition.

Also could someone help me put together a basic army list (since its both space marines I will just buy two of everything)
I'd like to just get playing, so I want to just go out and buy everything. I'd just like to know what I should buy to start with.

Any help appreciated.

Hi Christof,

4000 points is a pretty good starting point, and you can grow up to 5-6000 points when you have more time :) .

For Marines if we stick strictly to the standard list I'd suggest:

Version A - Shooty Marines

Battle Company 850
Devastator Company 1000
Land Raider Company 750
Bike Company 450
Reaver 500-600 (depending on weapons...550 with an MRL and 2 Volcano!)
Thunderbolts
Librarian
and add a Techmarine or some Dreads if you have leftover points.

Version B - In your face Marines

Assault + Teleport 850
Scout Company 450
Thunderhawk x3 300
Devestator Company 1000
Land Raider Co 750
Warhound with 2 Quake Cannon 300
Hunter Squad 150
Land Speeder Squad 200

Zap gives excellent lists there but they utilise a lot of different box sets and blister packs.  What sort of money do you have to throw at this and will you be getting the classic models or the newer E:A models? Either way eBay is your friend or Chaosorc as he has lots of plastics if you ask him.

My initial suggestions for an army list if you are buying the Space Marine box set itself is -

Tactical Company (in box)
Land Raiders (in box)
Warlord (in box)
Whirlwinds (1 blister pack)
Vindicators (1 blister pack)
Speeders or bikes (1 blister pack)
Thunderhawk (1 blister pack)
Hunters (1 blister pack, new style only though)

For cheapness go for the old blisters not the GW current ones from mail order.

So that would be the bulk of the forces.  Gives you the options of utilising most of the rules as well to get use to them. It's a bit harder to get the other forces in the correct quantities now as they have changed from edition to edition and E:A's quantities in blisters / boxes are not the same as required for NetEpic or SM2.
