I voted for 10k points
but our last battles were smaller 5k-7k

I prefere bigger battles because that means EPIC

Our biggest battle was about 36000 points per side
1 day to sort out miniatures
1 day set up
1 day playing 2 and a half turns

and yes you need a lot of beer

To me it seem that the battles take longer and longer / point used. If I want to finish it in one evening without rushing things more than 5000 is not advisable. Makes me a bit sad cause I like big battles with titans slugging it out...

Today I might have about 4K in an average battle..

*sigh* I feel your pain Mr P.

We tried playing battles in the Games Workshop store but you really only get a couple of hours in after you set up... and after you manage to fight off the last wave of nerdy ponces that assault you with what they think is conversation but really just sounds like someone shouting at you that they have an awesome 40K Space Marine army and it's awesome!

We ended up decreasing the size of the army. We started at 4K (unfinished game), then went to 3K (again, unfinished game), then 2K (yet another unfinished game, but that one had a half hour intermission for me describing with visual aids to one nerd what I would do to him if he ever said Firefly or Serenity was shite while in my hearing ever again), I think next week we're each taking one infantry stand... I'm looking forward to it... *sigh*

Man, I'm never leaving my games room again...

Being able to return to a set up battle/table is a must for any BIG battles.

Hi!

Conversations on game time always make me feel like a freak of nature.

My average time for 4k game is 1 hour and 30 minutes. With 30 minutes to 45 minutes of setup time.

I kid you not....  :p

I tend to pre-plan battles. So I show up already knowing what the board is going to look like and have all the terrain picked out.

Second I have my army and composition picked out before as well.

These two are tremendous time savers and can easily save you a couple of hours of game time.

The last is very player dependent. I rarely if ever look up anything rules-wise during a game. If my memory fails I'll happily take the opponents recollection of rules and stats. I'll look them up after the game. Combine two players like this and you save a couple of hours as well.

Also, I tend to think what I will do strategy-wise in my turn when the opponent has his turn. This too saves time.

I have ran and successfully concluded games to around 25k-30 PER SIDE in 6 hours (sans setup time which was done the day before). I usually arbitrate such games and keep players moving the game along to insure it is completed in the allotted time.

When I gamed frequently I could routinely play 2-3 4k games in the course of the afternoon.

Those were the days.....  :)
