The Ultramarine force was huge, and was capable of literally just rolling across planets. I saw them as wielding huge, highly organised, technologically advanced forces. They have access to as much support weapons as needed due to Ultramars massive economy.
The Chimera just seems like a better choice when you are dealing with a planetary invasion force, we aren't talking surgical strikes here - this is a legion bent on single handedly conquering an entire world, probably many worlds at once!
My reasoning for why the Ultramarines took more planets than the Space Wolves in the campaign was that they could split there forces where as the wolves would just decend on a planet in a furious horde of power armour clad barbarions and shred all the resistance (but without the numbers or organisation to take several planets at once).
With the basilisks, I was just trying to create a legion that was ideal for the purpose it was given, and basilisks would be useful... Alpha legion would have Whirlwinds instead as I see them being more mobile than the ultramarines.... ironically I would like to see the Alpha Legion being split into centuries much like the current Codex Astartes.

Well in SM2, Marines could use some IG stuff, too. And I see your logic there. I thought Chimeras were post Heresy ? But I say go for it. I'm no "purist" !

Oh god - you are right!
Hmmm..... guess in that case I should replace the Chimeras with Land Raiders then. Rhinos for the fast assault units and the slower Land Raiders for the rest...

Hi!
I wouldn't worry too much about GW canon, if it fits your vision use chimeras.

Land Raiders transport my TAC Dets, and Rhinos (or Razorbacks) my DEVs, and Assault SMs have jump packs and no transports. That's basically the way we do it ...

Well, mechanics wise I can't comment, but fluff wise I can suggest 2 new formations for the Space Wolves. One, the Varangii were apparently an entire chapter(?) of veterans. As for the other unit, Leman Russ apparently did not mix the Terran and Fenrisian units together, so the Terranii would form their own clan, possibly with a more standard organization?

Uhh wasn't it the Blood Angels, Imperial Fists and White Scars at the palace? The Space Wolves didn't arrive with the Dark Angels until after Horus met his maker and the Ultramarines were nowhere near at the time
