**Rummages in WD collection**
Citadel are pretty old in fact - in my oldest WD (#16), they are listed in the "Molten Magic" miniature column as bringing out a few sci-fi figures including a little jetbike, various "adventurers", etc. This is Dec 1979/ Jan 1980 BTW- WD was every 2 months then!!
>>When Rogue trader was new I think Warhammer fantasy was in its third edition already.
Yeah, #87 was 3rd Ed WH, and #93, 94 were when Rouge Trader was released.
WD started about 1977/78 then, I'm thinking, juding from #16..

I am fairly sure that Warhammer FB was GW's starter game, which would put it at 1975, the same time as GW started. The recent articles about the Realm of Chaos books mentioned that they were started at the beginning, but only made it by 3rd Edition, and that they were being done when GW was still young.

Now I really show my age (this is pretty much accurate, but a lot is from memory). Though the Stuff of Legends site was used to confirm some details.
GW was originally formed to distribute D&D in this country in 1975, the then Steve Jackson (not the US version the UK one) and Ian Livingstone asked a friend Bryan Ansell to form Citadel Miniatures in 1978. Though GW was based in London and Citadel in Nottingham they were one company. Citadel started to release miniatures in 1979. First ad was in WD #12.
Warhammer 1st Edition was released IIRC approx 20 years ago - I know I bought it (recently sold it on eBay for silly amounts of money). If I had to out money on it I am sure it was 1983.
2nd Edition came out in 1985 and the third edition in 1987 (the same year as Rogue Trader aka WH40K). AT came out in 1989 (could have been 1988) and Space Marine came out in 1989.
This was as Primarch says when they really starting to become a big company...

Hi!
Yup, thats about right and jives with my recollection of the dates. I came in contact with GW and Citadel through Dragon magazine, so my first memories of Warhammer ads were around 1983-84, so thats on the money.
Its interesting to know how they started through RPG's, somethng which they have totally "divorced" themselves from over the years. Those who have pre-40k WD's can see what a vibrant interesting magazine it was. Heck, I think many of the monsters that made it into the legendary first edition "fiend folio" may have had their origins in WD articles. Even the art was pretty cool!
hehe, glad to know there are many old foggies like me who remember these things

Hehe just to say I'm not an oldie... I'm just a rather sad younger gamer who has fanatically searched for old WD's and boxed sets.... ...Yeah, I have to agree with primarch about the "vibrant" magazine that WD was... the letters page seemed particulary good, with some very interesting debates going on, and, while I like GW art in general, the old covers are far better in my opinion- there were some exceptionally good ones by the likes of Chris Achilleos, and others, taken from RPG and book covers and of course, they had Thrud the Barbarian... a most amusing comic... Ah, I'm liking this topic... lol

Unfortunately most of my WDs from that era are currently in the garage and inaccessible therefore I can't remember what the debate was on... female characters possibly....

Hi!
To drive home how some view old WD as opposed to newer ones, the old WDs are the only ones I have seen to actually draw high bids on an auction on the net. Newer WD's either go for cover value or MUCH less. Very old WD's are very valuable, not as much as Dragon, but not cheap either.
