In my universe, the ratkin are a race like the humans, in that some are good and some are bad. The "Good" ratkin are the Rats of Averlino, who have a long trading relationship with the Florentine Republic, and stood with them at the Battle of Treponti against the Fallen Empire. The Venetians are not as forgiving of them, however, often lumping them in with the Plague Rats who have sided with the Fallen Empire and raid Venetian towns on the Ionian Coast.
