Hey everyone how ya doin' ?

My name is Alban and I am doing the concept art for the Dieselpunk line. My privious work for the Insect Nomads can be seen here.

In this journal i want to show off sketches, ideas and designs for all future races of this line. I will also outline the world and some of the culture aspects. That is all used as guidelines for the design process.
Working alone in my chamber did not went all too well so a change of pace is needed. For that I would love your help. Give me all your thoughts, ideas and criticism.

__________________________

The core Idea

A WW I fantasy setting.

The original Idea was to mix known and unknown fantasy races with WWI Technology and some magic. It is important to say we wanted to go away from established lines and styles. Finding our own ideas and vision. As there is always some influence and visual library the main source of inspiration is the Ghibli Movie "Nausicaä" as well as the Manga.
Will this influence is important we still want to find our own voice.

__________________________

The World

THe world itself is still in flux but it is not unlike our own. Similar in climate and topography. We have cold poles and a hot equator. Most of its surface is water maybe even more then on earth.

Here nothing is certain for now. I will manifest as we go forward.

__________________________

The Races

In this world you will find a pletora of classic fantasy creatures. I am not sure if we keep the generic names or maybe even change the race attributes during development. It's a bit wonky at the moment. I will add to and rewrite the desciptions as we go.

Humans - The second largest population group. Several Kingdoms and Nations in the West are mostly populated by humans. They have constant wars over land and resources as the crushing influence of the dwarfen sphere is nearly impossible to keep away. Some Nations further from the borders the dwarfen ladns are bringin back hte concepts of segregation and promoting a human only society.
Still you can find humans everywhere on the planet. With a huga variety on societies and nations.

Dwarfs/Halflings - The largest population group in our world. Smaller than humans but a bit more buff. The are on avarage as strong as a human. After the Elves vanished they quickly took thier place as the dominating race. Unlike in other worlds dawrfs do not only live in mountains and hate sunlight. Most of the dwarf population (if not most of all population) is living in thier vast Cities.
After the Elves vanished, they abolished the segregation of races and started developing new technologies that quickly helped thier rise to be the dominating force of the planet.

Orks/Kobolds/Fairy Folk - Originally from the northern areas of the world. While not from the same blood and flesh. Orks, Kobolds and Fairies live together in a closely knitt society. Living in cold woods and mountains regions traditionaly hunting and gathering was the ways to live. But the growing populaiton and the constant push by dwarfen colonists made them change thier ways.
Under the banner of the Aliance of the Tribes most of them now build settlements, start gathering resources and import technology at a grnad scale. The north is rich in resources.
The Orks are a matriachal society. Females have a much lower birth (15-20%) rate and are also much bigger than male orks. Males are only bit bigger than humans. Females are often double the size. After reaching the age of marriage a female ork often gets several husbands over the years. Wich is called a household.
Kobolds are smaller than orks nad humans. You can see that they are somewaht realted to orks but they have a male/female ratio like humans. They are very attached to the ork society and adapted most of thier traditions and ways to live. Which means that they are also a matriach society.
Fairies are the smaller and bigger creatures that live in the northern hemisphere. They are can be loners at times but a lot are jsut living and working with the new ork settlements.

Elves - The ancient superpower that isolated itself from the world. Elves are now a myth to most people. After having enough of the constant quabbles of the younger races they sealed them self and most of the free magic behind a barrier.
For hundreds of years nobody saw an elve. No the barrier broke and two worlds collide once again. Everything has changed from the time they sealed themselves.

Giants - A race maybe even older than the elves and once powerfull magicians. They lost magic with everyone else. The giants are born small. Around 3m in hight. A giant never stops growing. The oldest giants can be over 100 meters tall.
After nearly being wiped out in a war against the elves they are now numerous again. Originaly from the east you can find them everywhere nowadays. Particularly the dwarfen city states are in high demand of strong builders.

Centaurs - Another race from the east. Living mostly as nomads and merchants.

I will add some of my sketches tomorrow. I fear I lost some during my last move. Still have some scanned but most whereo n paper. Which is a horrible medium when moving every few years. There is always some loss. :(

All that said. I am super stocked to show you all more of my stuff while working on it. Getting some input and ideas from you will help greatly i think.

Sketches i made so far and have to find:

- Dwarfs - completed infantry, lots and lots of sketches for tanks and such.
- Orks - roughly half an army. Lots of infantry
- Centaurs/Beastman - some basic sketches
- Western Kingdoms - some basic sketches
- Giants - a small army worth of units

Thats it. Now i have to find them :eh

I hope you will do soldiers in Stahlhelm or pickelhaube helmets.

The only situation with that is there are already a number of the those out there now. That has come up before when taking to model makers. Many times they want to offer something unique. Like the Microworld figures in desert garb, not to many out there now. So that is/may be a consideration.

Sorted through some of my paper mountain. Found a good chunk of sketches. Still missing some. Later I will scan some of them.

I mean I am a little obsessed with those helmets so I would probably like everything wearing them, no matter what. I can imagine Dwarf riders with Stahlhelms or Pickelhaubes on motorbikes or on tanks <3

File comment: So called thumbnails. Small sketches to find shapes for races or units. We can see some stuff like a centipede that i used for the insect nomads.

File comment: The very first sketch for diespunk line. At least if I remember correctly. The Bird riders and the Dawrf left a good impression and build the foundation for the human and the dwarf armies.
