I'm working on slowly painting and basing a bunch of Microworld stuff for use in role playing games. One question I have is about the Hawk Riders.

Does the cast-in flight stand work? (Does it sag or break over time?) Or are people redoing the hawk riders with flight stands?

How does this sound? I was thinking of using 3/4" plastic casters with 11/16" nails. (The stuff you nail into furniture legs so the wood isn't wrecking the floor.) The plastic caster is flat, I can attach a thin magnet. I can drill out the base of the hawk and use the nail as the stand. I can even "sculpt" the plastic caster base if I want.

ETA: fix spelling

my warhawk riders are still on their cast-in flight stands. I bought them just after they were released and have not noticed any sag over the years. However, for stability you will want to stick them on a larger base or they'll fall over easily.

Thanks! Good to know.

I already figured on making a larger base for them. Maybe green stuff on a magnet.

I've attached a scan of the cleaned up minis. It is only attached, since it is pretty large.

Update on this. My magnets came in. Basing the hawk rider with a 1/2" circular rare earth magnet 1/32" thick, I think I need to rebase it. The magnet holds to something like a knife (what I stick stuff to to work on them) so strongly it's tough to get the hawk rider off with the soft metal flight stand. So, I'm probably going to look for something to rebase with tomorrow.

Drill a hole and glue a nail into the bottom maybe?

The plan is either casters or flathead nails. ;D

I went with a nail glued to a 1/2" magnet.

I used a thin cutting wheel between the feet of the hawk to remove the base of the metal stand and make a slot for the nail. I used a grinding bit for the Dremel to make the end of the nail like a flat tip screwdriver. Which then got glued between the feet of the hawk.

I like how it came out, and the longer nail lets you pick up the nail rather than the hawk.

I've attached a picture of the primed mini with a base built up on the magnet.

Cool stuff! If I didn't already paint up all the hawk units I needed I would redo them with different height acrylic rods, it would probably look great.
