Post subject:  State of the Microworld December 2013

It has been a long time since the last update, so I thought I would open another thread giving an overview of what I have planned for 2014.

2013 was a big year for MWG seeing the release of 3 full armies, 2 of which (Lizardmen and Dark Alliance) were my biggest releases to date. I have also had my fair share of difficulties with casting issues on some of the TEF products and cost issues for one of my casters and recently released 6mm fantasy armies. I also learned a lot about what the market will actually support, and what amount of units are actually viable to release. A notable high point has been the development of working relationships with a couple of great concept artists which should enrich all releases going forward.

Onwards to 2014 plans! Being at 10 armies, and based upon feedback received on these forums, I plan to use 2014 to consolidate and fill out some of the missing items from existing armies, but I’ll also be releasing some new stuff as well.

Beastkin – Fauns with spears and bows, Dire boars, and a centerpiece Mammothtaur

Dwarves – additional infantry units (crossbows, veteran warriors) and a centerpiece steam tank unit.

Orcs – Wyvern rider, Boar chariot

Undead – Tons of stuff! Ghouls, zombies, Werebats, bone golems, stitch golems, bone catapults.

Wood Elves – Light Archer cavalry, unridden Unicorns

Does this finish all of the lines up? No, it doesn’t, and I may expand more in the future…but I believe this plugs up a lot of holes for now. Release timing for these is really hard to say, as it is entirely dependent on the sculptor’s schedule, which is quite busy at the moment!

For the new stuff, we will definitely have a full goblin army in the first half of the year, perhaps as early as May. The Orc Wyvern and boar chariot will be released at the same time. The rough release schedule looks something like this, but it is highly subject to change!

Jan 2014 – rereleased TEF Komodo tanks, Warthog Support vehicles

Feb 2014 – Beastkin wave 2

March 2014 – Foundationist Support platforms, Foundationist Special Weapon Infantry, Beastmen w/ rifles, Assault Beastmen, Minotaurs /w heavy weapons

April 2014 – Kreen Overlord infantry, Kreen Heavy Assault Crawler, Kreen Gunship

May 2014 – Orc packs, full Goblin army

June 2014 – Undead wave 1.5 - Ghouls, Zombies, Werebats

Everything beyond that is really up in the air, and is entirely dependent on the sculptors’ respective schedules, as well as my ability to find another backup caster. I will say that I hope to release a full demon army in late summer (art currently about 50% done) and finish up the year with all the “wrapup” units for the other fantasy armies.

This does leave me with a bit of a backlog in terms of army releases and art though. As of right now I have art completed for an Ogre army, the Wildlands, as well as the Kingdom of Light army. All 3 of these look like they will be released in 2015... unless sales dictate otherwise!

Here is a parting art preview of the beastkin Mammothtaur:

Do you have a webpage that consolidates all the concept/finish artwork? Or could you have the artwork linked to the respective races/armies on the Microworld website?

This is all exciting news. :o
I am a fan of many of these armies and some of these additions are going to be really useful.
I clicked on the picture and found some more artwork.

Are you able to confirm that you will be doing some goblin spider riders? :spin

These would be the most welcome of all possible additions, except perhaps the orc wyvern....and the fauns....and the demon army......and the unicorns...etc etc

Great seeing all the new minis coming out. You are doing a great job determining what needs to come out next. I think that the Ogre army, goblin army, and undead expansions are all good choices and will be in high demand. The release of all the new fantasy movies lately (Hobbit 2, 47 Ronin, Seventh Son) has really been inspiring me to get my armies done.

All looks good. Glad to see the sci-fi side is also getting some attention.

Also, I'd like to say that these are my favorite posts of any sites, anywhere. It's nice to see what's coming, the artwork, future ideas and a release schedule. I would love to see these more often. Maybe quarterly or 3X a year? Yeah!

Just put in my second order. Hope 2014 will bring you good business, so that you can keep up with your awesome design sketches.

Best of wishes,
Fredmans

Spider riders. Oh yeah. Oh yeah.

When you did goblin wolf riders, I painted up 140 of them, cos they are great.
I'll get at least that many spider riders as soon as they come out. Make an extra few for me please.
I have seen the spiders in the hobbit 2 and have a great idea how to base these.

I dont know if this has been brought up before but have you considered using crowdfunding? evil and chaos has run two successful 6mm projects by now, so I definitely think there is room for a fantasy project too! ;D

Post subject:  Re: State of the Microworld December 2013

I have thought many times about using crowdfunding, but I don't think it is really for me. It looks like it is extremely stressful to run one. I have enough stress in my day job, I run the business for fun. I also work a lot, so I'm not sure I could really deliver on the level of communication and advertisement that would be necessary. I also get nervous taking money for things I haven't successfully produced yet.

Plus kickstarters and such are run on eye candy...I'm not sure little sculpted 6mm guys really count for the extra crowd I would need to attract. The Troublemaker IGG campaigns were for models to be used as Epic corollaries. In my experience, models with even the faintest hint of use in Epic sell as much as 5 times more than anything else I put out. A majority of what I would release has no use in Epic, I just don't think I would make the numbers to even pay for moldmaking.
