Come to Cardiff, maybe the RDF also recruit from rugby playing barbarians?

The problem is that vehicles can be modelled to scale but figures can not.

Let us assume that 1mm = 1 foot.

On this basis it is fairly easy to get a vehicle to be the right size.

However infantry can be the right height but not the right width.
6mm infantry always look too big when placed next to a proper scale vehicle.
I have just measured my forearm and it is just over 4" wide.
Which is 1/3rd of a foot.
Sooo using the assumption that 1mm = 1 foot the arms on a 6mm figure should be about 0.33mm wide.
This is simply not possible.
I have just measured some of my 6mm troops and they are about 3mm wide at the shoulders.
I am not aware of many people that are 3 foot wide.

So we have the situation where in order to make 1/300th figures robust they must be bigger in 'chunkiness' than their vehicle counterparts which can be the right size as they are essentially just chunks of lead and be 0.33mm smaller without compromising sturdiness.

As such infantry already look bigger than they should next to a vehicle unless you oversize the vehicles o match the ovesized figures.

Yup and you've done a great job in making everything work together. Cheers!

I have just had the samples of my APC back:

The master prints were destroyed/ruined in the mould making process and as you can see the finished article is in no way saleable.

Back to where I was a few weeks ago except minus a few hundred quid..
This has really upset me quite a bit.

AB, how did that cost you a few hundred quid? The sculptors I've contracted with in the past charge about £3 per millimeter. A 6mm vehicle as a green stuff master should be no more than about £20 to £40. Standard moulds cost around £14 and Ian Kay over at Irregular Miniatures charges me about £25 for making a master mould (which includes the cost of the mould), then another £25 for the production mould. the only problem is finding a guy that does vehicles, the first sculptor I used refused to even do horses.

Sinking several hundred quid into the production of a single 6mm vehicle is somewhat shocking. But I know how that feels, a couple of years ago I commissioned a 15mm ornithopter (it cost £350 to have made) and I got back a mould containing some usable parts and a mangled airframe, I was gutted. The problem was that I did not allow enough time for the green stuff to cure before subjecting it to the mould making process.

It is not a sculpt as per se.
The master was a digital file, the cost to get it designed was £100.00.
Getting 2 sets of masters printed cost me £80.00
Paying for the master mould (which I have not been billed for yet) will no doubt cost me.
Now I have to go and get some more sets printed and find a caster that will not destroy my masters or cast something that is unsaleable.

The money is a pain, I can get over that.
It is being told by the casters they have plenty of experience with printed masters and then being told the models look good before they send them.
Only to get those.

Like you no doubt felt, I am gutted.
Weeks of work, the first vehicle in my own sci-fi range and after all the work and money I finally open the samples and see them.

Printed / CAD vehicles have more detail and better quality than any traditional sculptor can mange in 6mm.
If you had a copy of the printed master infront of you you would see the amazing neatness and detail, it is that extra level of quality that I paid for and the casters made it into something that looks like it was made from plasticine.
They print detail less than 1/3rd of a mm, and can make perfectly straight lines that thin as long as you like, or curved edges that thin as long as you like.
I got my designed at a bargain price too as no doubt many people that use CAD on here will testify too.

It has just really peed me off.
The casting company has not been in touch yet but I am waiting to see what they wish to charge, considering they broke my property and made a substandard product.

I keep switching between angry and sad.

Thanks for the explanation. I have only worked with the traditional means of production and with that it is expected that masters will be destroyed/damaged in the mould making process. We also experience a shrinkage of up to 10% from the master to the production castings.

Question, having had your 3D design made could you not get it printed by a company like Shapeways?

Shapeways does not quite have the finish that I like.
Their best material/finish is quite good, but for a slightly higher price you can get a more smooth less ridged finish.
I did get a quote for the whole apc/trailer turrets etc for $500.00 which was as smooth as glass, but that is just too much for me.
So I went for a much cheaper finish and spent a few hours with very fine sandpaper rubbing away the print lines.

I would be very happy to discuss the process and show you some examples if you want to e-mail me?

Right then, a quick update on the status of my two 6mm sci-fi vehicles.

The replacement printed model of the MS1 Pathmaster is here as is the first print of the Camel ATV.

I have done some sanding of the print lines to try and get them as smooth as possible.
Tomorrow they will be sent to the new casters who will make them into lovely metal toys for us to play with!!

Here are some comparison shots of the 2 vehicles next to each other.
As you can see the RDF like BIG vehicles, but then they are all built like brick poop houses.

I have been sent some images of my 2 sci-fi vehicles that have been cast in super tough resin ready to be used to make the master mould.

Here they are:

Hopefully not too long now!
