The galaxy- home to a million billion souls. As Mankind pushed relentlessly into space, such amazing strains were placed upon its expansion that massive production of raw materials were needed. Surveys from the galactic core showed dozens of worlds rich in metals, enough to supply the wave of Humanity that crashed over one star system after another. But these worlds were hostile; heavy gravity, little to no atmosphere, giant rocks in space. That was why we were created.
Tailored to work for the betterment of Man, we were engineered from Man by Man. Scientists called us Genmods, historians called us Dwarves, the common man simply called us
Squats. We as a people, regardless of the labels placed upon us, thought of ourselves as a single race: Human.
Deep in the galaxy we established the Homeworlds and for ten thousand years we furnished the Imperium with all that it needed. We fought brutal wars against the Orks. We toiled against the Eldar. We resisted the predations of Chaos. We drew our own blood in civil wars. And yes, we stubbornly defended every last meter of our homes against the onslaught of the Tyranids. But nothing, absolutely nothing, could have prepared us for the enemy that lay within.
