My advice would be to avoid any kind of racist connotations, i.e. the gorilla kingdom of Africa or something like that. Steampunk is already pretty reactionary as a genre and it's easy to fall into that trap.

I think some of the factions from the now mostly defunct game Monsterpocalypse are ace - http://monsterpocalypse.com/gallery (yes they have an ape empire too!).

That really wasn't what I was suggesting. What I was suggesting was an advance human civilization in the middle of the African continent.

Most of these types of games involve old white guys vs other old white guys (or maybe Asian guys or Martian guys). Why not give technologically advanced black guys have a shot for a change (without the cliched charicatures).

It would be more original than triffids (which are alien flowers, right?)

If we did/do an African faction, I think the idea of making them high tech and "rational" has a lot of merit.
I definitely want to avoid the easy tropes of the genre.

I like the idea of traditional African weaponry/clothing/shields etc being echoed in the form of power armour suits etc.

How about an underground faction ala the Morlocks? Maybe they're ticked off at everyone stealing their coal, and are coming above ground to stop them.

I know, I wasn't even implying I swear. Still, even if very high-tech, the Africans could have domesticated the mega fauna of their continent in their favour? And maybe even have conducted a few experiments...

As an alternative to the Martians, you can do sea invaders? Either sea mammals who also got bipedal and smart or maybe an old alien invasion that crash-landed and only woke up now w/ the rumbling of the steamships. Gives you an opportunity to do infantry w/ fishbowl helmets, and any kind of crazy tech you might want.

Dystopian Wars is a big game right now. If you could somehow work some rocket powered assault troops into the mix, players can use Timeline to simulate assaults between ships instead of the very boring method of rolling dice for theoretical troops.

germans already have steam jet infantry.

The African Confederacy sounds awesome. potentially highly racist, but awesome. Stay away from the noble savage, but inverted colonialisim could be fun (generally isolationist, they are interfering now as a police action, since these white savages are too hirearchial and short sighted for self governance)

How about the American Leauge - sidesteps the whole slavery thing. Forces are primarily calvary, dragoons and helicopters. They also employ sasquatch and wendigos as heavy commandos.

The Astrolasians might well use solar cell sails instead of coal - like the treasure planet disney movie, but less obviously boat shaped (designs derived from british landships) - except they generally use large wheels with sprung sections (like in 2001) instead of tracks. Soldiers are wearing doc octopus style exosuits.

An army based on 'monkey, journey to the west' would be seven shades of awesome, but I can't see it really fitting in the universe - perhaps the mecha forces of the Indian Academy of Meta-Sciences ? Powerful forces, but limited by the need of mysticly imbued aether to channel their energies.

also, how's this for a weird true fact: USA Civil war:

Glowing wounds. After the Battle of Shiloh in 1862, soldiers reported a peculiar phenomenon: glow-in-the-dark wounds. More than 16,000 soldiers from both armies were wounded during the battle, and neither Union nor Confederate medical personnel were prepared for the carnage. Soldiers lay in the mud for two rainy days, and many of them noticed that their wounds glowed in the dark. In fact, the injured whose wounds glowed seemed to heal better than the others. In 2001, two Maryland teenagers solved the mystery (and won a top prize at an international science fair). The wounded became hypothermic, and their lowered body temperatures made ideal conditions for a bioluminescent bacterium called Photorhabdus luminescens, which inhibits pathogens.

The Triffids sounds interesting to me Image .... and for that matter any non-human ... :D Of course the Triffids could be used for terrain as well, in Epic or other venues ... And after you kill them they make a nice salad ... Image

Oh, rocket jets abound. In that case I would recommend simply mimicking the countries from Dystopian Wars. People can then play out mini-Timeline 300 game when ships get close or during large land battles. That might make for some awesome kitbusting too where large 10mm scale decks (or parts of decks) are placed on either side of the board and players try to take each other through fields of flak. For ground wars extra large tanks would be great too.

Our intention isn't to ape Dystopian Wars; We have our own quirky world and are building a game to play in it. If the miniatures can be used for other games, great, but that's not our primary aim.

Case in point, our best selling range so far are the Martians, a faction not represented in dystopian wars.
