Hi all,
this is probably unoriginal, but - just in case it isn't, and in the remote chance it might work, here's the idea:

Remembering GW's most often forgotten recent game, Gorkamorka, I wondered how it would look in Epic scale, and decided it would be fun to have a set of army lists based on hordes of not-too-brilliant troops.

The gist of the idea is to play a version (and I need opinions on which would be best-suited to this idea) of Epic with no new rules (or perhaps with some campaign rules tied up with objectives and loot) and heavily-limited army lists.  I am including a word doc (very crude and incomplete and probably error-filled) with a few lists I thought up. Each lists include unlimited (except by points) ordinary troops and very, very few better troops and vehicles. For example, an Imperial PDF force could boast a single Leman Russ... !

The forces include: Gorkamorka-type Orks (with some Feral ideas); Imperial PDF; Chaos Cults; Genestealer cults; Necron Raiders; DE Raiders; Eldar scouts; Squat bikers.

The advanrtages:
1 - small points games?
2 - an incentive to paint more troops (mine get sidelined by tanks)
3 - something different and 'horde-ish'
4 - something with characterful armies we've missed (genestealer cult, Squat bikers, etc).

Any thoughts? Would this work? Or should I stick to weird conversions?  :p

edit - ok, perhaps more than 1 Tarantula for PDF....
I also emphasised psykers a bit in these lists, at least for the races which can have them; and I added a few golden oldies - Goffik Rokkers, to name but one  example. So a handful of new rules would be needed.

If the game mechanics and stats were kept the same, I'd say it is an excellent idea.  Balancing it would be a chore but completely workable given the scale.  It would be a great way to teach Epic without breaking out a monster load of mini's (although that is often what is so appealing).

Interesting idea.

I'd preferably keep mechanics the same, except (as I said) for 'tween game campaign development and warband-style trading, finding of loot etc.
But that does not mean isolated games cannot be played, of course.

New troop types, well, I'd start with existing stuff, and (for fun) add one or two new types per army. Such as my beloved Goffik Rok band and the Imperial traction engine. Perhaps these would better be kept beyond the basic premise, and treated as house-rules available to the unwashed masses. These units would NOT replace tanks and titans and fliers, but would just be weird units with the potential for fun  :p Incidentally, I included no fliers, but am tempted to add a war balloon of some sort for the Squats or the Orks;    or perhaps, as something  new, a generic unit which could be added to any one of a number of armies. Just shooting from the hip here.

Would it defeat the whole concept of massed arms in Epic?
For treadheads and Titanophiles, yes. For people who love Warmaster, and the idea of a horde army, no. And that'swhat I'm looking at, a sort of techno-Warmaster.

Moscovian, the training aspect of the idea was one which escaped me, but which could work.

Incidentally, in case you were wondering, this whole job is the result of me being stuck at home working on the write-up of the PhD and having my mind wander to less trivial pursuits....

It seems to me that you're basically talking about revised army lists for small games, as opposed to GT lists.

I think it will work just fine.  Francois' "Minigeddon" rules have some things you might want to look at (GT-style scenario for small armies).

Yes, the training aspect is something that popped to the forefront in my mind.  Using those little formations on a tiny board would be great for a crowded gaming store when there are no full tables available.

Vets may find the games fun for a warm-up or when they just don't have time to play a full game (or they're too drunk and punchy to get through one seriousl).

Which ruleset were you thinking of using as a basis?  Strongly biaised here I guess but I think it would work pretty well with the NE rules and feature cut-down versions of Ork/PDF/Frateris/Standard Chaos/Genestealer Cult type armies...low tech, no units with special rules etc.  I think this would be fairly easy to balance too as there is an inherent balance in the basic troop types for all the armies in NE.

I'm completely undecided - so thanks for the opinion :)
Mind you, this is something I'll tackle after the old PhD gets done, hopefully by December 2007.
