Tau Markerlights are represented in different ways in Epic and 40K (and I think that they work better in Epic). How justified are the other uses of the Markerlights in 40K? There seems to be a number of different applications of the Markerlight in 40K which doesnt fit with the the background. So, if you could change the rules, how would you better impliment Markerlights? Also, there are a number of Crisis configurations, such as Fireknife. Are these derived from common player combinations, or are they background based? And, is there a list of them somewhere? Thanks. |

I'd simply like to ask what the justification is behind not having a 'to hit' roll for Markerlights in Epic, making it automatic when the markerlight-weilding formations are generally pretty powerful anyway is quite strong. Also, there are a number of Crisis configurations, such as Fireknife. Are these derived from common player combinations, or are they background based? And, is there a list of them somewhere? If you're thinking of doing some different stats for Crisis suits, I'd just go with WYSIWG (There's 4-5 different configs to pick from?). |

I'm happy with the Epic markerlight rules as they are - they are a good compromise between being too abstract and too complicated, they don't do anything without supporting missiles and this combined arms approach is something unique to the Tau. GW seem to have taken down the details of the Crisis configs from the 40k website. Here's the highlights: VIOR'LA TA'RO'CHA - DEATH RAIN CONFIGURATION Three Shas'ui all with twin-linked missile pod, drone controller and 2 gun drones. VIOR'LA TA'RO'CHA - SUN FORGE CONFIGURATION Three Shas'ui all with twin-linked fusion blaster and shield generator. VIOR'LA TA'RO'CHA - BURNING EYE CONFIGURATION Shas'vre and two Shas'ui all with twin-linked plasma rifle and target lock. VIORL'AN MONAT CONFIGURATION One Shas'vre, bonded, drone controller and two gun drones, burst cannon, fusion blaster, hard-wired multi-tracker. SA'CEA CONFIGURATION - KE'LSHAN'TSUA'M'PADROCH'UL'SYN One Shas'vre with hard-wired drone controller and two shield drones, target lock and twin-linked plasma rifle; One Shas'ui with flamer, burst cannon and fusion blaster; One Shas'ui with target lock and twin-linked fusion blaster. TAU'N TA'RO'CHA - BRIGHTWIND CONFIGURATION Shas'vre and two Shas'ui. The Shas'vre has burst cannon, plasma rifle, multi-tracker and hard-wired drone controller with two gun drones. One Shas'ui has a target lock, a fusion blaster and a missile pod, the other Shas'ui has a missile pod, a plasma rifle and a multi-tracker. TAU'N TA'RO'CHA - DARKFALL CONFIGURATION Shas'vre and 2 Shas'ui. The Shas'vre has twin-linked missile pods, a drone controller with two gun drones and a hard-wired blacksun filter. One Shas'ui has a shield generator, a flamer and a drone controller with two gun drones, the other has a flamer, a fusion blaster and a drone controller with two shield drones. T'AU TA'RO'CHA - FIREKNIFE CONFIGURATION One Shas'ui with plasma rifle, multi-tracker, missile pod, hard-wired drone controller with two gun drones, bonded. Two Shas'ui with plasma rifle, multi-tracker, missile pod, bonded. T'AU TA'RO'CHA - BLINDING SPEAR PATTERN One Shas'vre with plasma rifle, burst cannon, multi-tracker, hard-wired drone controller (two gun drones). Two Shas'ui with plasma rifle, burst cannon, multi-tracker. T'AU MONAT - SOUL CLEANSE CONFIGURATION One Shas'ui with flamer, fusion blaster, shield generator, hard-wired drone controller. I have the rest of the background detailing the suggested battlefield roles for each config in a word doc - drop me a line if you want a copy. Orde |

This has nothing to do with Epic. I can understand why the rules are different between 40K and Epic, simply the number of seekers available on the table means that 40K needs other uses for a Markerlight. I did find a couple of sites detailing some configurations (including Wiki). I am just curious about the best way to use Markerlights if you dont have Seekers - and that is why 40K drops cover saves (which I think is a good idea) and has other advantages (which I dont think work so well). Colonel, I would be interested in the background. Thanks. |

I haven't used my Tau in 40k much (find them a bit dull tbh - but then I'm an ork player really) In 40k you can use the marker lights that you hit with to lower cover saves, increase ballistic skill of other units that target the same unit, lower the leadership value of the troops and the seeker missiles too. In 40K I hardly ever use them for seekers. Nearly all mine have been used to make my troops hit better. With most troops having BS3 - they need help to actually get all those shots on target. So I'll use my pathfinders to mark a scary enemy infantry unit (like in the last game I lit up a 10 man black templar jump unit with chaplain) and fire a full squad of fire warriors if I can. (in that game I was able to rapid fire - and did a lot of damage. 2's to hit and 3's to wound.) Dropping cover saves is useful - if your opponents aren't in power armour or equiv. But improving hitting is definantly the best option. |

So, if I can extract some conclusions... Markerlights should be used to guide Seekers by the background. However, in 40K they actually 'guide' other weapons as well (in the sense that they negate cover saves for another squad to fire). What got me started in all of this is wondering why the standard Tau SMS isnt guided by Markerlights. |

It could be, but then you would have to lower it by the bonus it could get. Prob a good idea - if firewarriors have markerlights otherwise its back to the pathfinder/tank army. |
