For you 40K players, have any of you had any experience with or against a Dustwing army?

I have a bunch of ideas for Rubric Termie conversions that I'll probably never do, but it has me wondering how a 40K army would work.  It also seems attractive in that if it's a workable force it could be fielded with ~30 models or so at 1500 points, making it relatively economical for a 40K army.

My guess is Deathwing from the talk of termies, but I'm afraid I've not played them so cant really help even if I am right :(

Rubric Termie = Thousand Sons; name adopted from Deathwing Dark Angels, as Tuff pointed out, am I right? With 'Dust' because these poor boys have been turned to Dust.
No,  I havn't - sound interesting.

Sorry.  I suppose I could have explained better, but then again, if you have to have it explained, you probably can't answer the question anyway...

Rubric Terminators with the name adopted from the DA Deathwing all-termie force.  Dust + Deathwing = Dustwing.

The basic principle is 3 squads of Rubric termies as elites and either token Rubric marines or daemons for core choices.

I'd tried something similar without marines - an elite squad chock full of sorcerers, a squad of K sons, piles of demons and a Defiler and Land raider - the latter being a bad idea.
One of my worst tourney performances ever- slow moving, the big guys were targetted and shot up early in each game (the very scarce terrain used locally is no help), and the others were then outnumbered and massacred. Abysymally poor shooting rolls did not help...
The termies might be a better proposition, but I generally feel that small armies tend to suffer, unles they're jetbikes.
And - how can you get a low cost army for this? Using models already in possession, or is there something I am missing?

I think the squad of sorcerers was an issue.  That seems to be almost universally panned by people commenting on the army.

There seem to be 2-3 ways that people make it work.

In lower-point games, use terrain as much as possible and do "hey, diddle, diddle, straight up the middle" to scoring position, hoping that the Terminators' toughness outlasts enemy fire because at lower points there are fewer high-end weapons that can threaten them.

At higher points, use LRs for transport.  This seems to require points that allow a minimum of 2, preferably 3 LRs.

Regardless of points, use the Ahriman's Chosen rules to teleport the squads.

===

I didn't actually figure out the dollar cost of the potential army yet.  I just figured if you're talking about ~25-30 models for an army that it couldn't be all that expensive.  Now that you questioned me on it, at ~$10 per Termie, that's still pushing $300.

At least it would be easy to carry.  :D

I bet the entire army would fit in a pistol case...

Hi NEal,
thanks for the comments - I'd agree terrain is essential for most games, certainly for most 1500 points or less. The stuff we used to have was barely enough for Warhammer Fantasy.
Land Raiders are a major source of worry - versatile, yes, but very expensive in points. Mine usually blows up early enough, with the exception of a single game when it suffered dozens of Eldar hits and only getting destroyed in the last turn. Then again, more than one might help (split targets and all that).

As for the cost - ah yes, I was just wondering whether they're cheaper across the pond  :D
But I agree 100% that a small army is a great idea when you consider transport; and that it would be a nice concept.
K Sons head on termies, or do you have a better/cheaper idea?

I was actually thinking of using Grey Knights for the basis, with WFB Ushabti glaives and probably scarabs made from the Khemri shoulder pads from Blood Bowl as well as assorted Tomb King bits.
