I was just wondering what is the mm size of the Battlecannon on a Leman Russ tank. ?

I was just wondering.

by my rough measurements I got 6-7mm as the inner diameter of the barrel.

So assumeing between a 1/56 (30mm) or
1/60 (28mm)  scale conversion I have a aprox 400 mm cannon.

So that means a Leman russ carries 16" cannon into battle.  Wow!  Take about your wacked out fantsy weapons.

Having stood next to the 15" gun in front of the Imperial War Museum, I have to say that the Leman Russ tank must be much bigger than it looks in miniature.  :;):

I couldn't imagine the havoc created by 16" guns on automatic fire!

Considering the recoil of such gun and the size of the Leman Russ turret (i.e. smaller than the leg room in a Mini) it has to fire rockets. Otherwise the breech of the gun would exit the turret through the rear plate when fired.

Wait, I tried to apply reality check to GW stuff. Nevermind.  :;):

I have always laughed at the size of the leman russ' gun, but I always put it down to GW thinking that a big gun looks cool and powerful, rather than doing any thinking about it.

It is a good size for the Epic Minis though. Microarmor tends to get their barrels bent all too easily. ...Can't really imagine that'd be an issue in 40k scale though... :;):

With the size in mind....

I now imgane it as shotting big plamsa bolts like Hammer's Slammers power gun concept.  (Legion would be proud)

Makes more sci-fi sense in this crazy universe.

:p  :D

In the background, it fires a variety of pretty much conventional tank shells.

No explanation is given as to how the loader manages to heft such huge shells into place with his bare hands, or how they manage to fire more than three shots per battle without running out of ammunition. :)

An autoloader would solve the first problem.

Aye but those seem remarkably rare in the Imperium for some reason. :)

That must be one of the pieces of technology that was lost over time.  :D

Well, according to IA1, it's a 120mm gun (awfully stubby barrel for a 120, though, and WAY out of scale).  Considering that an autocannon is a roughly 75mm bore in theory and a 75 has never been any semblance of man-portable for a 2-man crew (PaK40s are man-luggable, maybe, but not really man-portable.  Ditto for the 75mm pack howitzers), GW must be dreaming/doing the "That looks cool, we'll use it!" routine, or they decided that the gunbarrel on the 40k Russ needed to match the aesthetics of the Epic model.

At any rate, I think I'm going to use the ISU-152mm gun barrel for my Pred Vanquishers (the muzzle brake on a 152 looks an awful lot like the muzzle brake on the GW Pred autocannon).

Bear in mind that in the far future everyone has giant hands! It's heroic scale - weapons are exaggerated. It's a model. It's there to look cool. If I was sculpting a Leman Russ I'd give it a bloody big gun and it wouldn't even occur to me about recoil...

It always amuses me that having battle-psykers running around spewing lightning from their fingertips is acceptable but it is the size of the gun barrel that is unbelievable. Funny how a big suspension of disbelief is easy but it is the little details that niggle...

Legion 4 is proud !    :)  But as Lion said, I'd go with the 120mm (like the M1 Abrams MBT) !  The M2 "Ursa" bettter know as "Blowers" used by Hammer's Regiment, packs a 200mm Powergun.  The problem with the L/Russ, is with a big 120mm, where do you store the ammo ?   Does it have an auto loader ?  The M2 does, but it fires what amounts to an automatic Plasma Cannon by G/W standards, or fluff (that would be a better word!).  And W/N is correct , a big barrel is more survivalable on a 6mm game scale.   GHQ, CinC, etc., those barrels bend like straw, and the F/W resin is too fragile !   My buddy 3rdI said, that is easy to suspened belief about a psyker throwing lightbolts, because we don't know how it works, but we know how an AFV's cannon should work !    :D    Frankly I'll take Slammer fluff over G/W any time !   :D

I know it only a game but sometimes it's just fun to comment on it.

The "How would that really work" imagination kicks in.

Besides if we all didn't have a "suspension of disbelief" factor we wouln't be at a sci-fi/fantasy gaming forum would we... :D
