Hi all,

I'm thinking of taking up 40k once more.  Any suggestions for which army I should go for?

I'm tempted by Eldar this time, but not sure how they are portrayed now in the game and in statistics.

This is mainly cause of the models and specialised troops they have.

Will they have a good chance against Marines?  I expect that my main opponent will be a Marine player...

Help!

When I was thinking about redoing 40k I looked at the Eldar.  They kind of bring back memories for me as one of my old mates had them.  They?re also neither completely rubbish, nor totally overpowered, I believe.

Another plus was that I like the original Aspect models so they can be had cheaply off eBay  :)

As I understand it, it?s possible to make them very effective against Marines due to the starcannon.  But I never used them, only read up on them online, so don?t take my word for it.

Eldar have a new Codex due in October, with lots of new minis on the way as well. Still reckoned to be a beardy, over powered army by many players though. (Toughness 8 Wraithlords! Aaarrgh!!!)

That's true - wait for the new Codex before investing.
If you want to have fun, go for the Orks or an Inquisition army with loads of messy interfering assassins. Otherwise, IG are interesting, SMs overused (yes, I have an army too!), Nids could be a nice change, IG can be good or terrible. DE are fast, not so easy to use otherwise. Eldar - well, a nice army, and can be very good. But I think that 40K more than any other game I've ever played needs a spot of fun and humour, rather than competition, to be enjoyable.

If I ever do the marines I have lying around, they will be pink?

Unless you have a real need to win at all costs, I would not worry about the stats of the army you select.

I would look at the miniatures and select the army that you would enjoy painting etc. Go for the look you would like and let the stats fall where they may.

I have a friend who has changed armies more then 10 times because he keeps looking to ride the "Who is the most powerful" wave. He is never happy with his army.

However, one of my others friends has been playing Orks from the begining. He has tons of different and fun models, but he also has enjoied his army the whole time. As he always says, sometimes I am the new army and some times I am not. He also wins with his orks about 80% of the time and he plays a lot against the friend who switches armies all the time.

Buy what will make you smile and have fun.

Just my .02

Hi all thanks for the advice.

I'm still thinking Eldar due to the models.  I love aspect warriors in 40k, especially the uber Exarch's (Phoenix lords?) they just look so cool.

What I didn't want however is an army that won't give me any sort of chance. I was reading Kotrin's section on Marines on his website and it made it sound like Marines completely dominated now days?

I couldn't think of anything worst than having to paint hundreds of IG in camo, sorry L4 but I need a bit of colour on these models!! Hence the Eldar and aspect warriors.

Tyranids would be my second force to think about but I'd be to tempted by the forgeworld stuff and my bank balance would plummet...

When was 40k last released?  Is it due to be done again soon?  We've got the battle for macragge box set with those rules, are they the latest?

Returning to the Dark Side really.  :D   Probably still got the Rogue trader book some where!

Epic will be my main focus though, 40k rules never really did it for me.  I'm just getting the army to keep my gaming buddy happy..

Sorry to paraphrase you Dafrca, but I think your advice is very sound.  Especially the bit on the fun side!

I think eldar offer a wide variety of differing styles so that will keep me occupied a lot!

I can understand that. I've actually been thinking about getting into Warhammer for the first time. Any guesses which army?  :p

Is this a good starting point for an Eldar army?
