From what I can ascertain, the regimental insignia is the little round badge on the left breast.  The platoons are identified by the color of the helmet stripe and the little symbols on each side of the helmet.  How are companies represented on the Codex Grey uniform?

Okay, after reviewing my copy of Warhammer 40,000 Compendium, I've discovered that the helmet stripe's color indidcates squad, not platoon.  Company affiliation is denoted by an insignia on the left shoulder.  What I can't figure our now is how to indicate platoon, aside from the big platoon banner that's only carried by one guy anyway.

According to W/D 109, pg. 48 ... Platoons are designated by the colors on the disc on the left side of his chest.  1 color = 1st Plt, 2 colors = 2nd, etc.  The disc is half one color and half another divided vertically, for 2nd.  3rd and 4th is cut like a pie in thirds or quarters with 3 or 4 colors respectively.  Hope that helps ! :D

My recommendation is paint each unit (platoon not squad, a plt = about 8-10 stands, a squad = about 2-3) a different color dot on the chest.  For example, we use SM1 templates and each IG Tac det = 9 stands, each det would have a different color dot. Helmet strips can further delineate your units.  A dot of paint on the shoulder(s) could also be used.  I've even gone as far as thinking about painting different dets with different colored uniforms ... tan, green, brown, gray, etc. ... :;):

Ah, here's a relevant quotation, from WD 109, I think:

"Uniforms are supplied at the foundation, but are not replaced thereafter; it is the responsibility of the Regimental Commander to arrange the supply of such items, and in an old-established Regiment it is common for uniforms to vary from platoon to platoon. The basic pattern of the uniform will remain the same, as laid down by Imperial regulations, but its colour and material will vary according to what is available at the time. Thus, for example, a Regimental Commander may requisition a batch of material from a factory on the Regiment's posting world, and if only blue material is available, then the replacement uniforms will be blue."

 That's a much easier scheme to use on the Epic scale, methinks.  Paint the sleeves different colors (pardon my American spelling!) from platoon to platoon.

I do not know how Fluff worthy it is, but I just do not worry about all the color. Some of the Guard I have received look like Clowns on parade.  :p

Me, I just imagine the markings are so small I can not see them at this scale and paint them all to match.  :laugh:

One idea, if you need to mark them somehow, mark the base.

Okay, so now what about helmet stripes?  Command squads have yellow.  Whiteshields have white.  "Support Squads" have blue?  Do Tactical Squads use blue stripes too?  Are there any other colors?
