We all know that all the games are produced primarily from the imperial point of view, and so all the threats/aliens in the galaxy are from their point of view.

I just wonder, if the time line was advanced a millenia or so, if there would be an imperium left.

Everything released is always a great threat to them, that surely now there's no way they can survive now.   I mean, apparantly Orks have the largest amount of numbers, and if they all colaborated they would sweep away all imperial resistance.

Also there's the encroaching Tyranids. They are gaining strength all the time, since most worlds can not stand in its path.  And when they are killed, they are simply absorbed to be born again.

Then there's the Tau, although not a huge threat, they aren't going to shifted easily.  The only hope is that the Tyranids do it for them.  But then who knows what monstrosities that will spurn once they have absorbed their genetic data.

Also there's the Eldar.  Whilst their numbers aren't enough to worry the imperium, their fiddling with the paths of the future is.

You cant forget the constant threat of chaos in its many guises.

And now finally Necrons.  The invincible C'tan (one of whom may even be on Mars itself).

Surely the Imperium is doomed, doomed I tells ya!

Hmmm, interesting. While I agree that the Imperium is under real threat, it has been for a long time. Even if the Imperium does die, humans will still find away of sticking around. I would guess that the worst thing that would happen would be that the Imperium loses majority control of the Galaxy. I dont think that the Tau or Eldar are a threat. The C'Tan may well be. But, Eldar Legend does talk about the coming of Chaos in a big way, so I wuold guess that this could be the biggest problem.

"I have followed the myriad potential futures of the Tau with great interest. Though barely even striplings compared to us, I feel a strange protectiveness towards them. In time I beleive they will exceed even our greatest featas and master the darkness within their souls."

See? i wasnt completely off :) it includes the word great, and futures...

Ive got hold of a Tau codex now, so I can have a look.

There is something weird about all the Ethereal business, and I thought something would come of it.  However, it seems they have been ignored.  They are just "special".

I had considered (a passing consideration, I have them all the time  :p   ) Doing a Tau army, but after receiving the codex, I was a bit miffed at the lack of options and selection available.  They need a good few more options.  I'm glad in a way though, its saved me money.

With the need to make so many threats to the Imperium at the moment for gaming purposes, I couldn't see it surviving in its present form for that much longer. Most likely outcome I reckon would be for it to shatter into many fragments. The majority of these fragments would be overun, some would be strong enough to retain much of the old Imperial systems, others would ally with aliens like the Tau, with varying degrees of success and willingness on both sides. A few splinters groups might actually prosper, for example the Ultramar region, where the progressive leadership of the Ultramarines might actually break free of the Imperium's shackles while retaining enough safeguards to survive in the harsh 40K universe. I can see the Sol system being much like Constantinople, under siege and host to the many wonders of the Imperium, isolated from allies and doomed to an eventual fall to the forces surrounding it. In some ways its demise would offer humanity a clean slate, in others it would witness the loss of so much knowledge (however garbled) and strength. Be interesting to set a future edition/spin off of 40K in this world, but unless the 13th Crusade does something
*really* radical, it doesn't seem that likely [read as never going to happen!].

I do think that the Imperium would grow stronger if they got rid of the way that technology is worshipped rather than understood.  The lack of invention is severly limiting the imperiums growth.  You only have to  look at the Tau to realise that.

It would be interesting to see what would happen upon the release of the Squats/Demiurge.  If they are a mutation of the terran gene (like Ogryns are) and they treat technology in the scientific way it should be.  Whether the Imperium will realise they are basing their beliefs of worshipping technology on false facts.  Probably not.  :L

I doubt the Imperium will treat tech differntly- its one of the key things about the 40k universe, that gives it that "dark ages" feel of knowledge for the very few, who even then, do not understand it fully..... :l

I dunno. It soesn't seem like the imperium would have time to change its ways before being broken. An evolution like that would take centurys maybe even a millenia. Considdering the size and distance between worlds. Anyway, I may be a doudious person but, comming out of a dark age, I would think the technology would need to be kept mysterious even magical. In order to keep control of the imperium. If worlds were to evolve beyond a certain point then the imperium would collaps from within. Especially if worlds were to given technological secrets before they were ready to recieve such secrets. With knowlege comes power. With power comes greed. With greed comes a whole lot of problems. Keeping subjects in the dark has always been the human way of ruling empires. As I said before I may just be synical. But that schizophrenic freak in his throne had better come up with a plan or the imperium is definatly doomed.  }:)

Unfortunantly, the time line is never going to advance enough for anything major, like the Emporer being reborn, to happen.  Its a shame.

I don't really agree. GW might advance the story a bit after this next world campaign but we are very unlikly to ever see anything signifficant ever happen like Chaos overthrowing the Imperium.

Well with the "finding" of new races, like the Tau & Kroot, Necron and maybe others in the future, that advances the story line somewhat. ?Check out the Netepic news, the Demiurg ( a Squat-like race ?) may show up years from now. ?If they do them in Epic, since I have a large Squat Force, they may be distant cousins, like the Romulans & Vulcans... "fascinating !" ? ? ?

Yeah, the storyline is advancing, albeit slowly. You have to remember that the GW studio does have limited time + budget, and I guess that it does take a lot of both to fully develop new branches well.... we wouldn't really like it if there was a huge change, but one that was poorly thought out, would we?! :O
hehe :)
