Can anyone recommend a good solo play rules set? I am looking for something built for solo - not just me playing both sides. I don't really mind what the scale or genre is, as long as it gives a decent game.

I have been looking at Tomorrows War. This doesn't have solo rules, but the first edition of Ambush Alley does - and I have found them - and I could probably adapt these to fit TW.

I also have Star Mogul, which I may be able to use, but this again isn't designed for solo. And, before anyone suggests, yes I have 5150, but the old edition of these.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks.

I have idly wondered whether "Ambush" would work as a miniature game. The system presents the player with a scenario and a squad, and then enemy are revealed through events. The combat system is a bit tortuous, which is where perhaps you might insert something a little more 'user friendly' . . .

I once wrote an algorithmic for playing nids like a true hive mind.

there's also the very simple zombie game if you don't mind playing something that feels a bit like space invaders (it was designed for multiple people to try and survive a horde of zombes, but one man controlling a team works just as well)

I was hoping for something a little more than a 'bug hunt'. Space Hulk does that well enough. Maybe I should just play Rome: Total War. I suspect that what I personally look for in a wargame cant be found in solo play.

I wonder if one could develop a semi-random dice-affected flow chart to detirmine an opponent's actions in Epic.

Has a forum run epic battle ever been tried? 1 person sets up, takes a pic/webcam feed, forum members post in thread to make moves, pic updates, repeat. Like vassal but even slower and more cumbersome.

It could probably be done. The trick is to make it complex enough that the 'enemy' can't be lead around by the nose by a player who can work out the reactions simply, simple enough to be viable, tight enough to get rid of the phenomenon of one player effectively playing both sides and adaptive enough to cope with a variety of battlefield situations. I suspect that Epic is too tactical and open for an effective solo set of rules. It really needs a more limited game. Any solo rules would require a table based on the type of enemy unit, the positioning of the objectives and and threat of the player.

Yeah. Smack talk in a solo game just comes across as a little sad and pathetic. :D

I guess that this would be possible, but would 'scratch a different itch'. Really, I would like a solo system for that odd hour when the only thing on TV is yet another repeat of Hollyoaks.... or the Olympics, thinking ahead.

I think there is something similar currently happening in the BFG forum on the specialist games site, the whole forum is playing against a guy's brother, he takes pics and forum members suggest moves..... Not sure how it works, but it's an interesting test of the 'too many cooks' approach...

something like FUBAR would be small enough to play around - even if it is you playing yourself.

or you could do some painting...

I just make machine gun, artillery fire and bombing run sound effects during solo play. Not that i'm above doing such in a real game either, it's just that i do little else when on my own. Wargaming meets raspberry blowing contest, blamblmalblamblam neeeequughg pspsptshtoshthot etc. :-[

I had a look at FUBAR but I don't think - as a rules set - it is really for me. I thought that this would be a chance for me to do something in 28mm for a change, and I am looking at the Gears of War board game now. I could do some painting, but I am finding it really difficult to get into the mindset to sit down and do any recently.

Who doesnt! Part of the joy of solo play is stopping a game half way through and just looking at it as a diorama. And, 'cotton wool bombardments' are infamous in my wargame circles for the same reason.

If you find yourself leading a flow chart opponent around you could play with less points for yourself or worse initiative etc.

Warhammer Quest is very playable solo, if you can find a copy.
