Post subject:  Big Mek w Kustom Force Field
So I have been working on a Mig mek w KFF. I do like the metal model that GW made but I am not a fan of painting metal models. So I decided to make my own out of plastic. I think it turned out pretty good, let me know what you think I could change as I do plan on making another one in the future.

So the body is the Runtherd from the gretchin box. There is a ton of plastic card the head is from the mek in a loots/burnas box. A random choppa from the Nobs box that I cut of the chainsaw blade and made a wrench type thing. The backpack is a few different things and an exhaust from the Ork bike box.

So again any C&C would be great. Thanks for your time and enjoy.

I've only just seen this thread, but I am seriously impressed. Great work!

I am curious though - why do you dislike painting metal models?

This is a lot of effort if that was truly your reasoning for doing it. Dont get me wrong - you've come up with a great piece that you should be proud of, but that, as a reason, confuses me!

From my past experiences, metal seems to chip easier on me. I am also a bit of a butterfingers, so I would rather drop a plastic model then metal, with or without it being painted. I also believe its easy to convert plastic then metal. And honestly, this is what I love most about the hobby, is converting.

Just a few reasons I prefer plastic over metal.

But thanks to both of you whom posted on here. And Otterman, if you want me to make one for you I can for a small fee of course. PM me if interested.

I'll chime in and say that this model rocks too :-)

Agree with the chippabiility (TM) of metal over plastic: they keep a hell of a lot better but the con is that metal models (i find) tend to have cripser details).

OK. Quite understand all your reasonings. Not so much the painting as such then, but the other effects of the metal. All fair points, especially the converting one & you do seem to excel at it!

@Kent: The older metal models I would have agreed with you, but the stuff they are doing now. I think the plastics are somewhat better then the metal models. But thats a personal thing.

Well as promised, here are a couple of pictures of both my Meks. They are all done and ready for priming. The bases I wanted to look like they are scavaging the battle field for gubbins and what not, so I hope you like.

Well, plastic certainly is easier to convert, but as many older painters, I still have a special place for the weight of a metal miniature in hand.

Anyway, those meks are amazing, well done !

Yeah I really never understood the whole weight of the metal model aspect. Alot of people I hear(well read) say that. But O-well to each there own.

I think it's because when I started the hobby, many years ago, the only miniatures available were metal. And when plastic was first introduced, generally plastic miniatures were of inferior quality (metal held better, crisper details), and the light weight of plastic minis felt "cheap".

Nowadays, the best plastic miniatures is about equal with metal or resin production, but a kind of nostalgia remains for some people. I don't choose my miniatures according to this , but I do still have a bias, and very lightweight mini still seem somewhat "cheap" to me.

The plastic miniature realm is also the exclusive realm of games Workshop. Plastic production requires a very expansive set up, and Grandma Wendy is still the only mini manufacturer with extensive plastic mini production. So, the plastic craze can be perceived as a kind of narrowness of mind, since many of the younger generation are barely aware that there are other mini companies out there, many of which produce an incredible variety and quality of goods.

Well, I don't pretend to nail it down, but I think it's the reasons that tend to produce that nostalgia for me.

Fair enough I guess. I have been playing for quit some time myself. I used to paint D&D minis for our weekend games and those were the lead ones too. I guess I can understand the nostalgia part about it, but when there are such good quailities in a plastic mini now I just say "metal what!"

There have been a few models that I have had to get because it was an awesome sculpt or what have you, but if I can get or make it out of plastic that is what I am going to do.

I guess it takes all types, and I am not here to judge. I just was curious and now I know at least from your stand point anyways. ;D

Well I have alittle something to show all of you, its something I have been working on. I am not quite finished yet. I have a bit more detail to do and some miner fixes here and there. But I hope you enjoy none the less. I give to you my Plasticard Meganob!
