Post subject:  Making your own transfers? Help needed!

Hello everybody,

I've been pondering about designing my own transfers to put on various models (mainly 6mm and BFG scaled stuff), but I don't really know how to make them. Do you guys have any experiences with this? Do you have any suggestions, tutorials, anything?

Cheers!

Weeeeeeeell it's really just like any regular printing really. I mean, you ever print on photo paper at a high enough res to not suck? Well that's about it :)

Things to note
-not all decal paper's the same so get the one that works on your tech
-Paper comes in clear and white backing. I've never have luck with white unless it's simple geometries
-At least 300dpi, more if you can do it
-trial on regular paper first. When things are "right" on sizes and quality, then go for the real thing
-White's a bitach unless you're rich and have the correct printer like some okidata 7xx series. It aint cheap to print either but might be worth asking around at a print shop somewhere close? Perhaps there's finally a budget printer that does white now so worth checking on.

With white printing, do you mean the white backing or printing white colours?

Old info, but this is about was how it was done a couple of years ago... (assuming you mean white printing - not printing on white sheets)

Stumbled across this oldie again (had forgotten about it in the mists of time) and I remembered you asking

The microsol / microset is an absolute requirement to not make your decals look sh!tty. Doesn't' matter if it's custom or not, but thought I'd point that out.

Yup. Microsol is necessary. Microset, not so much. but the microsol is a definite.

Yeah it's good to note that the 'sol' is the more important of the two as that's what "binds" and "pushes down" the decal into the paint. The 'set' is still useful but it's for softening the decal which is important to work it into not flat spots on a model; Water alone wouldn't cut it there. I'm finishing up an Assault Ram where the decal is moulded into and across vents on the side, for instance, and was totally needed. I'l post pics soon If you're just putting it on a flatish or gently curved area, you're spot on that it's overkill. Good looking out, Nitpick!

To be honest, this stuff opened up the world of decals for me. Sure, I did the gloss varnish before and all sorts of stuff, but everything pales in comparison with this miracle elixir.

^Ohhh another good point!^
Yes gloss first (makes the 'Sol work better), dry, apply decal, another thin gloss (to protect and make permanent), dullcoat

MicroSet is what makes the decal stick better, MicroSol is what softens it so it conforms to non-flat surfaces.

I usually gloss coat, brush on MicroSet, put the decal on, wick away the water with a paper strip or a brush, let it dry a bit, and then brush on as many coats of MicroSol as I need to make it lay flat. Sol really softens the paper, so you have to be careful you don't tear it.

That's how I did it for these anyway:
