So I'm finally getting around to making some moulds. Just starting with something simple, casting up some bases.

One question - will I need to apply some sort of release agent or sealant to the bases before covering it in silicon? The bases are made from some kind of resin/plastic so I don't think I'll have too much to worry about but I don't want to destroy the mould when I take them out...

I never bothered when making my castellum proxy moulds or for casting them either.

Just be careful when peeling the mould back from the master and castings.

I would brush the masters with either baby oil or vaseline thinned with white spirit, I've had both silicone and siligum stick to stuff and it can be a pig to remove

You can probably get away without it, but the best practice here is to use the same release agent used while casting finished parts - I spray my masters with Ease-Release 200 before mixing and pouring the silicone.

Quick answer: no you don't need to. You can though, it might help a little but not that much. Always use mold release when pouring resin though, resin sucks the oils out of the silicone causing yellowing, cracking and mold degradation. I have done quiet a bit of casting, split molds, single mold, two part molds, pressure pot, and room pressure casting. Let me know if you need any help. Resinaddict.com taught me everything, it's an invaluable resource.
