So having some models Ive finally been able to get a couple of games in. And in some ways its been awesome as Ive been playing with a friend who had bought some of the epic FW terrain. Playing on that (knowing how much it can go for on Ebay) felt quite decadent :p.

So here's the board we've been playing on:

But the other terrain is the old cardboard buildings which dont look up to scratch next to the detail of the FW models. So Ive taken it upon myself to try to sort out some terrain. Im thinking to go back to trying some 3D design and using it to make something quite modular.

I have got a bit done but I need to upload pictures. Will get them up as soon as I can.

I would do the forests on a green/brown base so it's more clear when units are in them or not.

I agree, looks good!

Those old cardboard buildings are still pretty cool in my book, I have loads of them in storage, when I get home im planning on tarting them up a bit. Maybe just painting the plastic roofs and putting them on some scenic bases would give them a new lease of life.

Nice buildings those. I would consider a new mat. I like my Zuzzy mat. A bit expensive and questionable communication, but very nice stuff.

Yeah, the map is pretty old (not mine). I think the big issue for me at the moment is that the card buildings are very different in size and appearance to the forgeworld ones. Also we want to have more city blocks/areas on the table.

Got on to the basic walls:
Image

The bit through the middle is where a floor would be (though Im only making the top layer every two). The idea is that the walls should be able to stack on top of one another so I can make different heights of building without having to make walls of different types.

The vertical lines show where the door will be. This is the same thickness as what the corner "columns" will be (basically the bits that join the building together). There will also be a "half" wall so the buildings can be different thicknesses.

Its a bit hard to explain but you'll see in time :p

Quick update. Ive done the bottom strip. Ive made it so its similar to the middle strip except that it misses out the bottom "line". The idea is that when you couple it with the strip at the top (if you're putting two layers together to make a 4 story building) then it will look just like the middle strip.

A bit late (and feeling a bit the worse for wear) to be posting but I got some good "work" done when I should have actually been working.

The "mini-columns" that divide up the building walls are now complete:

Coming along nicely.

Had a bit more free time over the weekend to get working on the building. Ive got the front finished:

The sides will just be the same without the door so that wont take long. Now onto the corner columns that will hold everything in place.

Got the pillar completed for the corner. The idea is to eventually get one done that can be used to continue the building on straight (to make a massive building) or to have a corner in reverse so I can make odd shaped like L or T shaped buildings. But for now a square/rectangular building will do.

Nice pillar.

Travelling time has given me an opportunity to work on the buildings some more:

Image

As you can see, there are long and short sections so buildings of different sizes can be made.

Ive also "test fit" the model on sketchup:

You can see the tabs at the bottom. The idea is to have a base/plinth and a roof as well. They should be done soon and then off to get them printed for a test fit! Exciting!

Seems like a very nice concept. Two things spring to mind. First a plinth means lots of material to be printed that will never be visible, second, your choice of design (buttresses and gothic windows) must be the most common by far and already covered by e.g. Troublemaker and others. Why not try something slightly different. Applying your obvious skill to something different from the current offerings, that would be interesting.
