After trying to resist for a year or so I recently gave in and bought a 3d printer. I ended up with an UP mini. And what better use for it than to print miniatures :)

First out is a spaceship of some kind.

And to have something familiar to compare with I also printed a chimera. As you can see there is lines, as with all 3d prints. But given the scale I think it is rather OK. I actually thought it would be worse. It might not be gaming standard. But I am thinking of ways to reduce the lines (acetone, varnish, thick paint).

1000 grit sandpaper works wonders.

Aye a bit of work with paper/file and It won't look half bad.

The idea of a 3D printer and what it an churn out has always been a subject that grips my imagination :)

I've been considering cutting a kidney out of each of the three stepsons to buy a good milling machine and 3D printer, but their mother might become cross.

Hi!

Bring them my way. I'll preform the surgery at home in privacy and we can split the proceeds.

I'll add an additional two kidneys from my kids. ;) ;D :P

We should be able to get something real good for 5 kidneys. ;)

I don't know the current market price of kidneys, but I think you will manage with one. If I remember correctly the printer sat me back less then £600 incl shipping. And I figure if I actually will spend my time modelling instead surfing the net and impulse buy minis I will actually go plus on it in a few years :)

The ship was mostly modeled in Google sketchup. But I find it hard to do rounder and more organic looking stuff in sketchup so I have more and more started to use blender. Blender is more competent than sketchup, but they have hidden all the functions behind strange shortkeys and unlogical menues.

The chimera was found on Thingiverse.

And a battle fortress for the green boys.

Probably replace the guns with steel wire on this.

Hmm, maybe give them a layer of ink or something, it's very hard, if not impossible, to make out the details. :(

I really like the "plow" front on the battlefortress. I can just see the ork crashing through junkyards and enemy fortifications now!
