I've been away for a couple of days, so sadly no new updates yet. I have some ideas for a variant prow with large turrets on it. As for the current turret component, I need to rework the turret design a bit since they are perhaps too small to print, so I started to tweak the design a bit:

Image

The one on the right is the old original turret, the barrels are too thin to print out without them bending. So I made the first variant (middle turret) which is the standard one mounted on the ships. However, I wanted the turret component to have something a bit different, so I started working on another variant (left turret). It still needs some beefing up, especially at the back.

I've also been pondering about the torpedos a bit. So far the original design is the strongest. The ones with the studs on them either look like something a frustrated housewife might keep in her bedroom drawer or something made for a David Tennant era Dalek episode of Doctor Who. Nothing against Doctor Who, I love that show, but I don't want a Dalek aesthetic for my stuff. So I need to kind of rethink the design for torpedo variants. I remember GW once had different types of torpedos for BFG, not models but markers, does anybody have that picture somewhere?

I tried hollowing it out already, all in all it saves me very little if I want to maintain a strong structure, around $5 to 7$ at most. I know this model has been hollowed out, but to such as extent that it doesn't have a bottom anymore as you can see here.

itressting. As i plan on making some BFG ships myself your project is full of intressting information. I will play with a simple form and test some pricing.

Wich materials do you use? FUD?

Regarding hollowing it out, i would not just make some holes into the bottom. I would cut it into 2 pieces. With jointing for the fitting.

sry for the horrible english. Not my brightes day :/

The plan is to use FUD. I could hollow it out, but it wouldn't remove that much. Looking at the Pre-heresy cruiser model that is available at Shapeways, it doesn't save that much when hollowed out, as you can see here. The thing with the pre-Heresy cruiser is, is that it has no bottom, it's just a big gap. Which is fine, especially considering the price of printing one in FUD every time. However, personally I love to have details on all sides of the model. And then hollowing it out only would save me very little. I'd rather pay more for a prototype that is very tough than save money and deal with a model that easily falls apart of bends.

In the meantime (I love saying that) I started working on the anti armor turrets. At first I was planning on making a 'sniper turret', which would have been a single long barreled device. However, the sizes we are dealing with here are super small, meaning that such a barrel would become very frail. I tried making it thicker, but it ended up looking ridiculous. So I came up with something different: PLASMA TURRETS! They are quite detailed, and I really wonder if the print will be able to show that, or that people could even see it at such a scale.

I Like these. Your ships are looking mighty cool. I'm not commenting much but I'm certainly keeping a Keen eye on your progress. I Love the homeworld inspiration.

Thanks for the reply dude! If you have any suggestions or critique, don't hold back! :)

In the meantime I've updated the plasma batteries a bit, lengthened the barrels a bit.

Been working on a prow variant. It's still very WIP, meaning that a lot of the details need to be added to it so it fits with the rest of the ship.

It's a prow variant. The torpedo prow will still exist. The ships are fully modular, the actual ship is the Distortion Engine module (back part), the parts in front of it are constantly refitted according to the captain's needs.

The plasma prow is downright nasty, the purpose of this weapon isn't to simply damage enemy ships so that they can be captured. It's purpose is to fully destroy the enemy, leave nothing alive. Mainly used against Org infected targets or Terramorphs.

By the way, here's a comparison shot between the plasma prow and torpedo prow:

Note that the prow is still very WIP.

By the way, I did do a little bit of work on the Legion ship, namely replacing the old turrets for the new ones. Reason behind it is that the barrels of the old turret are too frail to print. I've also hollowed out the design greatly, but at the same time I've been pondering of making the ships slightly bigger than normal BFG models (cruiser being 15cm long for example), but I'm not 100% sure on that yet...
