Hi!

This here is the future of model making. Add 3d printing and scanning into the mix and its the full package.

Great times to live in. ;)

They look decent enough but the OOP versions from around here had superior designs and detail.

Good to see the Monolith only took 6 hours though. I've been thinking about trying 3d modelling and printing myself (probably starting with trench rails and other upgrades for my Krieg battle tanks) but didn't have much idea how long it took.

Thanks for the kudos, folks! I'm normally known here as "javelin98", but I can't seem to login or recover my password, so I had to re-register. These will eventually be available on Shapeways, and I'm going to hollow them out significantly to save on the printing costs. The not-Monolith will likely be a two-part model (top and bottom). I'm contemplating doing up an Abattoir and Obelisk, and maybe the funky Scythe flier. What else would the Epic community be needing in that scale?

Given the ready supply of Orks (thanks to the generously-packed Epic 40K boxed set, circa 1998), I don't know if I'll spend too much more time on them, but I will at least make available the ones I have already designed. I really want to do a Battlefortress, though, so that might still be in the offing.

I have some Eldar terrain up on my Shapeways store, too, but the vehicle models have too many organic curves in them for me to do them real justice. I'm using the free version of Sketchup and am still a babe in the woods at CAD, so I'll have to leave those to someone else.

Anyway, I'm open to suggestions, if anybody has any!

Thanks,
jav98

Hey jav98!

The non-ziggurat looks very nice!
Judging by the time it took you it won't be the first time you are using the software, right?

I am about to do a testprint for our own non-ziggurat model and would be very interested in how much your model will cost.
We are trying to make it as cheap as possible while maintaining as much detail as possible.
Maybe we can swap tips at one point?! :)

Some nice things NoloContendere - on TMP and shapeways - particularly like the armadillo.

Interested to hear how you get on printing from Sketchup ? I use it at work quite a lot and i see that tools for 3D printing are being incorporated all the time. I had heard you get a lot of errors ?

Also interested to see some printed examples in different finishes.

@MrGonzo: Sure thing! Once I get it all properly broken down into components, I'll let you know what it will run on Shapeways! Gotta love the DIY wargaming community.

@Blip: I don't get a lot of errors, but sometimes it can be difficult to tell what will print well via Shapeways and what won't. Working in tenths of a millimeter, it can be hard to visualize how some details will turn out. One thing I know -- I have some 15mm starship consoles and whatnot, and the QWERTY keyboards printed just fine -- the keys being around .2mm to .4mm across.
