I will probably participate. It is just too cool an idea not to. It is just that my way of doing it will probably not be through sketches. Cheering and constructive criticism, yes. Financing talents, yes.

From what I understand, 3D skills do not necessarily equate design skill as in novel and aesthetically pleasing concept artwork. There are loads and loads of very talented scifi oriented artists that could help providing that. I could probably scribble something that would look sort of like a truck of Gothique lineage, but others would do it so very very much better.

This is my thinking too. I've seen some fantastic original sculpts (the recent Onslaught Miniatures thread for example), but not enough to constitute a product line or satisfy demand.

Another advantage of using artists from "outside" the hobby is that development can be done in a "clean room" environment, which would ensure that no one else's IP gets in accidentally. Also, professional artists may be more adept at avoiding infringement than an enthusiastic amateur.

Very true, just before I read this I was trying to come up with a vision of what a sci-fi/Egyptian funeral barge might look like in my head, very hard to do without vanes, crystals and geometric panels.

I'm all for the idea but I don't necessarily think we should ignore the ideas of unregonised artists, they may not be polished and lovely but the creative pool we'd be drawing from would be much larger. I'm not much of a sketcher but every now and then a doodle looks like it might have potential and I certainly wouldn't mind everyone poking fun at my childish scrawl if it gave somebody an idea which was carried forward. There may even be a half way house in that some ideas could quickly be roughly knocked up in something like sketchup for presentation and review/critique before the real hours go into designing it properly.

I think that there is an even more interesting aspect of engaging non-GW-nerd illustrators. I think that they will move away from the most panicky mimicking of the current kosher of a BigBrother concoction of common myths and designs that is GW because they are not tainted. Well at least I think this might be interesting. Pushing the design envelope a bit further than copying what sometimes, quite frankly, is mediocre even in its original incarnations.

Just going to put this out there, stugmeister a forum member with an active art blog has done some nice concept sketches for me. I recommend him, especially since here, he's family.

Yeah he would be a great resource, provided not buried in commission work already. Even if it was to take this from a generalized idea to something "mouth watering" for a kickstarter.

I have looked through most of Stugs pieces. They are nice enough, but also not deviating one micrometer from established grim dark artwork. Would it not be interesting to push at least slightly beyond what is already there?

Struck out on my own to see about getting 6mm original IP items in universe compatible look and feel (aka Grim Dark TM). So far I've had pretty good reception on several ventures I've discussed with a couple of different peoples. At the moment, currently trying to work out a deal regarding getting this debiggerized or straight out licensed to us for 6mm.
Image

This is going to production in 28mm scale by a particular model house so we're clear in any legal way if this can get negotiated to be sold in a smaller size by them.

Also am in negotiations on something I will call Project Athenia for a new assault tank and leave it at that until things are more locked in. :D

Even talking up some people on the board in trying to feed some original ideas their way to produce.

So the question is, do we really want to try out in practice what we've talked about here or are we just fapping? :D

thoughts?

Just fapping :-)

In all seriousness, well done for being proactive and great news that the idea has been well received.

I feel at last something good might come out of this latest IP-troll incident. Good to see that the level of creative confidence is increasing!

Jodrells idea is very interesting. I for one would support this kind of approach. It really isn't that hard to get a "wish list" of the initial items which we would like to be produced. Then we need the artists to draw them out in true Grim Dark (Tm) style :). Someone who has the skills could draw some 3D models out of them and there we would have a nice starter package to show in a kickstarter.

I would put my time to this and also some funding.

Very good! So, what would be the best approach: A centralized model coordinating entire ranges or single enthusiast bursts as comes natural? If I got the idea of these two being the current options, my beliefs would strongly suggest a haphazard 1000 flowers blooming kind of strategy. The other way of doing it seems untenable given the nature of fan based hobbyism. loose coordination via e.g. this forum on what others are planning etc. is probably enough.

The initial idea was to create a centralised catalogue here, with links and details, and people requested that any particular piece was added to the catalogue here. It kjeeps it simple, and informal, and keeps the individuals in control of what they are doing.

Perfect! Looking forward to seeing the first sketches in that catalogue!

In general debiggerizing has been well received though in most cases in a reaction more aligned to "really? never thought of doing Epic. People will pay for that?". Probably what that means is that if we're serious about this people need to step up and plan to actually purchase if made available.

Regardless, I'll kick some stuff off in just a bit to post some rough sketches on some items / ideas I've had to hopefully get someone who can CAD something more than cylinder/circle primitives interested enough to run with it. In all cases these have real world equivalents / precedents to show that in no way are these based on anyone's IP.
