So I have finally begun to paint the 3mm Vanguard figures I picked up some time ago. They are for a 3mm Horus Heresy project with Ultramarines against Word Bearers.

The issue I am having is how to make the 'blue guys' looks like Ultramarines. Anyone have any suggestions?

The Battle of Calth, would it?

The three colors I’ve found most successful for Heresy-era Ultramarines are Sapphire Blue, True Blue and Sky Blue, all three from Reaper. They will look brighter than the sort of royal blue you’d expect from 30K Ultramarines but will nicely point up the detail on the Vanguard tinies. If you want very deep shadows on them, you could start with a darker base blue, say Ritterlich Blue. For the gold highlights, avoid metallics at 3mm scale and go for an orange base color with a yellow middle coat, a clear yellow enhancer and a pure white highlight.

It is indeed Calth. I'll give the orange suggestion a try.

So here is what I have. There are no edges on the pauldrons of the marines to add any edging. I added a few white spots but I might look at doing an entire pauldron in metal or just a dot of it on one or two helmets.

I am quite surprised at how well the orange/yellow/white worked. Thanks for that tip.

Colour scheme looks good but they seem a bit swamped by their bases and sparse looking. I think they'd look better either with twice as many models per base or using bases half the size.

I was going to say perhaps a full squad 10 men to a base.

I haven't finished the bases yet. I actually don't want them to be clumped up.

I think you need smaller infantry bases. I also recommend pre-setting your infantry on the base. They look a little too spread out on the land on that, I assume, 1” x 1” base? They really need no more than 3/4” x 3/4”, and I use as little as 3/4” x 5/8”.

Looks good to me.

To be honest the troopers have good spacing in reality making them less vulnerable to burst weapons.
