Post subject:  USING 3MM FIGURES
Having looked longingly at various 3mm figures for a while now, I have decided to take the
plunge and ordered my first box from Vanguard. As with most people, my plan is to raise
Horus Heresy armies.

I do, however, wonder about what rules to use. I have played Epic Armageddon for many
years and really enjoy the games. For me, however, the look of the game is critical and I
would like to take advantage of the smalller scale to use larger, 'terrained' bases. From the
examples I have seen, 3mm really lends itself to this.

I do wonder how this will work with the EA rules. I could keep the same number of bases
per unit (but each one being that much larger), halve the number of bases and keep the
same rules or halve the no of bases and double the effect of each base ?

Has anyone built and used 3mm armies ? If so, do you use EA or other rules ?

Grateful for any thoughts.

You've making a good move - 3mm scale is great and an excellent value, and the Vanguard minis are superbly detailed at 3mm scale and the best bet for a Horus Heresy game ad small scale.

I use EA straight at 3mm scale, but I like to base my 3mm figures singly, just like downscaled EA units. Future War Commander would do what you're looking to do, though. Also, Vanguard is developing a mass-combat game called Dominion that utilizes unit-based pieces with multiple tanks and squads on a single base.

Mr Average is right you should check out my Dominion rules which were developed for my 3mm range, you can download a free version of the basic fast play version on the vanguard website.

Wanting to play big Horus Heresy games was what inspired the 3mm range in the first place, 6mm was just to big to really do justice to the size of the battles depicted in that era.

Thank you for the replies. I've downloaded Dominion Wars (which looks excellent on a first read through) and will also look at Future Wars Commander. Our group plays Warmaster regularly so I will have a head start with the latter. I do like the look of DW however and when I have enough 3mm troops will give this a run through.

You could also play EA at 1" = 5cm. Half-scale, effectively. You could get in a game on a coffee table.

Of the three, my opinion is that you'll find Dominion and NetEA have the most "flavor." FWC is easy to play but feels more generic, so I use it for more "hard" sci fi milieus. NetEA is better if you're going to base your units in individual vehicles and squads, like so:

Whereas Dominion is more geared to company scale actions with multi-unit basing like so (this is not my work, but that of fellow enthusiast James Parsons, FYI):
