I read through a great artielce found at Star-ship combay knews by Star ranger on basing starships.  

I thought it was great and I would try it on my next star ship minis.

I must say I had good success with it.  

The real hard part was making sure I got the everything strait for the ships wouldn't look like they were banking hard.

I also wanted to point out I found a smaller jewelry clasp my my local craft store (Micheals) that worked very well.

Here are some comparison photos and shots of the finished product.













As you can see this clasp is a little longer but thinner than the one mentioned in the article.

For me it had that advantage of having to drill smaller whole.  It was also sold in whole packs at the craft store while the other style I could only find in a mix bags.

You can buy them all over the place...

I have lots of links for magnet shops at the 6mm-Minis Yahoo E-group and elsewhere...

One of the best deals comes from D&G, but there are lots of options.

Instead of the clasp, you simply glue a small powerful rare earth magnet to the bottom of your model.

You can drill a hole in the bottom of the model to mount the magnet flush or simply find a flat spot and glue it on.

You do have to be careful of polarities, but if you don't align the polarities correctly, you can simply put a metal disk or washer inbetween the two improperly aligned magnets and you're in business again.

For bigger models, you can use larger magents.

Most magnets work fine with 1/300 contemporary aircraft, 1/300 starfighters, 1/600 contemporary aircraft and the like.

By the way, the measurements refer to the diameter of the magnet. They are available in all different thicknesses... 1/32" or 1/16" thickness are most common for smaller rare earth magnets.

1/32" = Best for 1/600 aircraft, fleet scale fighters and one of my favorite uses: 1/300 removable propellors (Can attack a spinning disk or static propellors). You can usually get them for less than 2 cents US a magnet... and very often less (100 for a $1.00 USD)

1/16" = Best for 1/300 OR 1/600 contemporary aircraft and starfighters (fleet scale). You can usually get them for less than 10 cents US a magnet... and very often less (5-8 cents each)


1/8" = Best for 1/300 contemporary aircraft and starfighters. You can usually get them for less than 10 to 12 cents US a magnet.

Larger = Best for larger capital space ships, very large comtemporary aircraft (1/300 C-130 transport aircraft for instance) and the like. You can usually get them for about 20 to 80 cents US a magnet.

I have been converting my BFG over to magnets for some time now. They store much more easily with the bases and ship miniatures separately.
