Motivated by Rays post I will start with something small.

From some left over pieces from 40k & BFG I kitbashed two almost identical vessels. I have the intention doing more of them in the same style.

Hope to post some pics soon, plus a listing of materials used.

From the start I builded them I saw them as fast hunting ships. Looking for merchant vessels, and looting them.

I would like to give them a weapon that would help them in attacking vessels, not to destroy them, but board them or something to get profit.

Tobari Raiders of the Khareshi Expanse

Tobari raider (light) points...40-50pts
hits 1
shields 2
speed 35cm
turns 90*
armour 5+
turrets 1

1 Disruptor 15cm F
1 Weapon battery 30cm F

Tobari raider (heavy) points...50-60pts
hits 1
shields 2
speed 25cm
turns 90*
armour  6+
turrets 1

1 Disruptor 15cm F
3 Weapon battery 30cm LFR

Disruptor
hits on 5+
negates shields

result of '5' inflict critical hit, roll D6 on chart
result of '6' inflict critical hit, roll D6 on chart and place BM

Advanced Teleport
Vessels may teleport attack even when shields are up. But instead of damaging systems the aliens search for materials of worth and dissapear fast.

When within 10cm a teleport raid may be made:

Per teleport attack roll a D6, if result is higher as remaining shields raid is succesfull.

Roll another D6:
multiply result with 5 against escorts, D6x5 result is number of victory points gained.
multiply result with 10 against cruisers, D6x10 result is number of victory points gained.

Normal boarding modifiers apply, eg SM have negative modifier when boarded this gives a result of (D6-1)x10.

edit: Weapon arc on light raider, speed & shields on heavy one. Points indication..

Names! Why not, like the Demiurg, steal from Homeworld!?

Just something like 'Raider of the Khareshi Wastes', or 'Ghost Ship of the Marenian Expanse', okay not a direct lift from HW, but certainly an allusion to those annoying little scrapyard 'dogs' that stole battleships and destroyers and things....

In fact, I'd be tempted to 'nod' to the idea that these are automated Demiurg vessels from a long-gone era...

Call them Tobari.
That was a proposed race name for the first couple drafts of Homeworld 2. Never came to any sort of official release (except in the release of some of Relic's design docs), so not as blatant a theft as Bentu'sin (Bentusi). Though the full race title was "Tobari Gangsters", so it doesn't quite fit...

I think there's a fit right there! It even sounds right.

For the disrupter weapons, 5 should be shields down(place blast markers), six is a hitpoint damage and auto critical hit?

Cool, thanks on the names. Tobari Raiders of the Khareshi Expanse doesn't sound bad at all. I even think I'll stick with that. :)

If 6 is damage point I will not give auto critical, since my fluffy view is they don't hurt (those disruptors).

Sounds good, no need to be cutting up precious power relays...

Now, what about the stats of the ships themselves?

I'm supposing:

6+ Armour
~2 Turrets
90* Turns(?)

How about an Artificer Class Cruiser:

4 Shields
6 Hits/Cruiser
15cm Speed
90* Turns
4 Turrets
6+ Armour
Prow Weapons Battery: FP8 FLR 45cm
Dorsal Disruptors: S2 30cm FLR
Port+StBd Disruptors: S2 15cm FL+FR

Special Rules:
* In boarding actions, triple it's Boarding Value
* Should an artificer ever successfully achieve a driven back result in a boarding action, a successful critical hit result gains the artificer an extra Hit Point(no limit).

Obviously, points would be sorted otherwise. I see this as a very kitbashed hull, with a bit of the bleakness of the Demiurg hull about it, so not quite as 'ramshackle' as an Ork ship. Colouration, I don't know how they've been made so far, but I see them as the same 'hull' colour as the Armageddon Fleet + a bit of a darker ink-wash.

Now, I'm thinking here two methods of 'control':

- A 'raiders' fleet that works very similar to a Tyranid Hivefleet[generally automated, but with imperatives and such]
- An automated or alternating 'independent' system of control for the ships dictating how they operate in a game with two seperate players and the Tobari as a 'third NPC fleet'.

If it's any consolation to anyone out there, all this has simply managed to secure the voice of the Bentusi in my head...quite worrying actually. I know thats supposed to be the Demiurg and all, but my good...a handful of ships trying to scavenge and loot 'passers by' with no clear display of their intentions...

2 turrets & 90* degree turns agreed on. The 6+ armour may be a little to much since they have 2 and 3 shields. But since they have to get close for their disruptor (15cm) it would make sense.

The cruiser has merit, but since I see the force mainly used in Privateer, eg as a sort of Wolf Pack, I will leave that to the last.
The force will consist mainly of escorts. As their homebase I see something as a Giant Scrap Convertor.. :O

Okay, for assembly the first thing you need to do is acquire lots of Chaos 40k backpacks....  1 backpack is the main body of the vessels. Rest will follow...

Colours, funny you gone in the same direction, is darkish brown - to an orange highlight. Maybe some green things for Alien influence. Still have to decide.

Did develop the teleport a little further to make more sense:

Advanced Teleport

Per teleport attack roll a D6:
3+ to 1 shielded vessels
4+ to 2 shielded vessels
5+ to 3 shielded vessels
6+ to 4 shielded and higher vessels

When succeeded roll another D6 for gaining victory points.

- against escorts multiply D6 roll with 3
- against escorts knocked out (as in Privateer is possible) multiply D6 roll with 5
- against cruiser (all sorts) multiply D6 roll with 10
- against battleships multiply D6 roll with 15

I see above as more balanced but maybe a little 'to-much' regarding dice rolls, or?

If not player controlled, option 2 is best. That would make 1 person sci-fi adventures possible...

I'll just throw some ideas in (as I want to see the models before any weapons stats (str/arc) are talked about):

(Disrupter) I like the idea, what if it were a little simpler: A D6 roll, on a 5 a BM is placed, on a 6 roll a D6 on the critical chart (a 1 is a fail!).
(Advanced teleporter) this is also cool, what if you had to roll a D6 over the targets shield str but only when in base contact? Then recieve D6x10Vps (with normal modifiers for H&R attacks, so D6-1x10Vps vs SM's).

(What are they?) Seriously, what race are these things going to be? (Either way sounds cool for a WOT scenario!)

When helping write the Tau rules (the ones in armada), I came up with the 'idea' of an automated mining drone (and factory) that the Tau gave to the Demiurg in return for Ion cannon Tech. (the Idea was that a number of Factory stations are put near an asteriod field and they send out mininng drones, which mine the asteroids (by drifting through while being 'tethered' to the station or each other with tracktor beams or similar). They would return with resources and then more minning drones would be made by the factory(ready to be taken apart or melted down when the owners come back). The end result is that a number of small plantoids would be made by the waste materials, there would be hundreds of thousands of drones and the asteroid field would be gone. (the Mining Drones would be roughly the size of Mantas!) (Which I'll use for a WOT scenario! :;): ) (I got the idea from these little robots that were released into a desert, they were solar powered and programed to seperate the sand into different colours. It would just be cool to do the same in BFG only in an asteroid field!)

Hmm, the Disruptor, would make the weapon weaker, the rolling on standard crit-hit is more BFG-ish. Would not be out of place. Maybe 5 + 6 are same, only 6 places BM?

Indeed rolling over (remaining??) shield strenght would make sense and make no need for a table.

What about the different values for escorts & cruisers. Really since cruisers have more storaged.
Normal (like SM) modifiers are appropiate.

They are gonna be Tobari Raiders! Background fluff needs working.

Forgive me, WOT?

Also, since they seem to be a bit of an ambiguous bunch, I think there's merit in restricting the background about them, but doing masses articles on things that have 'gone on' in the Khareshi Expanse(like the Anargo Sector Project, but smaller, and better...! :80:  ).

I'm half tempted to put this as the 'end point' for Kor'O Xis'or's fleet in the wake of a successful 3PE Campaign...

3 Heroes and some Defenders, off exploring the vast wilderness of space, chasing down an unknown ship that obliterated the last colony settled by Xis'or's forces, finally coming to the Khareshi Expanse. There could be Imperial Scout patrols lost up in there, wolf pack pirates, Tobari Raiders, Chaotic Rebels...ooh the fun!

'Instructions' follow tomorrow somehow...

a bit earlier:

Light escort, materials used
- Chaos backpack 40k
- 40k Rhino (or any other SM tank AFAIK) searchlight, need one half.
- 2 BFG lance turrets
- 40k Heavy Flamer (front/flame exhaust)
- some thin wire

When you look at pics, they seem quite obvious, but:

Backpack is hull, the hole in backpack is keel, nice fit for stem and the top of the pack is the rear;
Fit searchlight on pack (see pics);
Turrets on either side of searchlight;
Flame exhaust on the rear;
thin wire at side where searchlight has opening (this is the Disruptor.

Heavier escort, materials used
- Chaos backpack 40k
- I taught the main body was a Multi Melta
- 2 BFG lance turrets
- Completely forgot what is on top of rear
- 2 BFG antennes (1 long & 1 short)
- thin wire

WOT = Warrant of Trade
