Sometimes I wonder why the speed of the IN battleships are so.
Emperor and Oberon at 15 cm and Retribution at 20 cm. I won't touch on the Apoc as I think it should have 15 cm.
We all know the lances draining the engine power are a major reason for ships slowing down, aside from heavier armor mass. So why would the Emperor, with no WBs and 6+ front armor have a speed of 15? Shouldn't it be the one to be at 20 cm?
The Oberon even though it has a total of 4 lances, I think can still bear the speed.
The Ret with its armor and 3 lances should then be the one moving at 15 cm. It's logical too as it would approach the enemy so that it's guns would be more efficient, using its front armor as protection.
As it is, the Emperors and to a certain extent the Oberons are hampered by the need to choose between RO, LO and BR. Speeding them up would then limit them to only RO or LO. I can understand the speed would be an offset to its low cost before when AC was unlimited but now that AC are not, I think the Emperor is too disadvantaged.
With the Ret, the choices of SOs would be between LO and BR. Not much of an issue as once it gets into range, its weapons can still hurt even if it BRs.
What do you all think?

Hmmm, you are going in dark waters with these proposals.
I understand you reasoning, however swapping speeds needs a major redo of the Retribution, otherwise nobody else would use it ever.

I think along with a reduction in points to 345 (which is where the Emperor is at right now), the Retribution would still be a viable choice. The Emperor will go to 365, the Oberon at 355. Feasible isn't it? The Apoc can be kept at 365.
Dark waters yes, but this is what this forum is for, right?

The Retribution at 345pts with 15cm is overcosted. Up up those batteries.
Then again on the speed, the Emperor can afford to straggle behind the rest of the fleet, the Retribution not.

Well, you can look at it this way. Imperial Battleships move at 15cm. However, the Retribution sacrifices a third of its broadside firepower to mount enough extra engines for +5cm speed. The Desolator does the same thing compared to a Despoiler, except that Chaos Battleships move at 20cm to start.

Oh, I agree the batteries of the Ret should be upped. Maybe to FP15@60 cm or FP18@45?
The Emperor in theory can afford to lag behind. In actuality, however, people will do all they can to place a BM on it as early as possible to force it to either RO or BR. Worse if it is actually forced to BFI, effectively knocking out its AC by not allowing it to RO.
The Ret with its armored prow is actually the better choice to lag behind as it's firepower (when upped) will not be compromised too much.
