Post subject:  Battle of Silver Nebula: help with names required

hello all,

I am working on the fluff for the River Plate battle (december 13th 1939) adaptation to BFG. I need help to convert the names so they still _sound_ like the original ones, but are _not_ the original ones :p

Any suggestions for name conversions will be appreciated :)

List of names (and potential adaptation in parentheses)

Graf Spee (Grand Spear// Garth's Spear ?? )

Exeter (Ex-Ether)
Achilles ( Achilles?? Sounds Imperial enough )
Ajax ( same as above )
Cumberland (Hunter Lance ??)
Ark Royal ( Ark Imperial )
Renown (   )

Commodore Henry Harwood (   )
kaptain Hans Langsdorff (   )

Montevideo (Mount's Rodeo ?? )
River Plate (Silver Nebula)

Malvine Islands ( ?? )
Cape of Good hope ( ??  )
Atlantic ocean ( ?? )
Indic Ocean  ( ?? )
Germany  ( ?? )

Thanks in advance. All suggestions are appreciated, since even the ones with names are only temporary solutions from the top of my head :)

Cheers,

Xavi

Graf Spee - Gryphon Sea

Exeter - Extreme

Arc Royal - Ark Royale

Will think of it some more.

Cumberland - Chamberlain

Reknown - Keeper I would say like Achilles and Ajax.

Vanvlak just suggested Grave Spear (Graf Spee), Rex Aether (Exeter) and Mondovideo (Montevideo). Sounds good to me! :D

I liked Gryphon Sea until I saw grave spear. The later has a much higher "chaos factor" in it! :p Thanks guys

Falkland Islands - Falk's Landings (A small collection of asteroid mining colonies)

Exeter - Executor

I'd probably keep the names Harwood and Langsdorff, but not refer to them by their first names.

I wonder what would convince a Chaos commander to skuttle his ship (Open the airlocks to space), especially after having evacuated the crew... not very Chaos-y... and I should know! :D

Perhaps a little psuedo-historical revisionism is in order, with the Chaos Battle-Cruiser making a last stand in the second battle against the Imperial fleet.  The Imperials could get reinforcements (Ark-Imperial & Renown) late in the battle, or perhaps that could even be a *third* battle, being that it was eminently possible the Graf Spee could have driven off the three-ship fleet that was waiting off the coast for it.

Scuttling, nope. More along the lines of suicide run against the imperial flagship and detonating the plasma reactors afterwards ;) Bu yes, if this escenario comes up nicely, I might try to develop a 2-5 escenario mini campaign for it.

Regarding names, I will keep "Grave Spear" (Graf Spee) and "Rex Aether" (Exeter) since IMO they sound better here. Falk's Landing sounds great to me. A small planet (colony) for it seems to fit.Idem with Chamberlain.

Great names so far dudes. Thanks a lot :D

You could also make Arc Royal into Arcturus Royale. You could start of the Graf Spee in one of it's raiding sorties, hitting transports and the like. I'd like to do something along the cruiser battles in the South Pacific, especially the area around Iron Bottom Sound.

Hi Xavi,
A few more sugestions (my others had been PMed).

Malvine Islands - Malevolent Islands (name of an asteroid group)
Cape of Good hope - Emperor's Hope Colony
Atlantic ocean - Atlantean rift
Indic Ocean - Indymion rift

cheers

I think this theme would make a great 'historical refight' set of scenarios in the vien of the ones included on Imperial Armour 3...

IE; You play the games not with the intent of changing the outcome of the battle (Because generally in historical refight scenarios that tends to be highly difficult), but with the intent of doing better than the 'historical' ship's captain did.

So the objective becomes 'what turn will the Imperial light-cruisers drive off the Grave Spear by, rather than making every scenario in the campaign a balanced game where either side can win.

Actually, we plan to do a mix of both.

We have been thinking about turning this into a mini-campaign.

The first game would be a convoy raid of the graf spee. he has all the advantage, biut must destroy a certain number of cargo vessels to count it as a total viictory.

The second one would be the more balanced escenario: the battle for the silver nebula.

The third one is the graf spee trying to break out. almost impossible, but he can put up a nice fight and sink a fair number of imperial ships in the process if he dares risk it all :)

the escenario currently being developed is designed to be hard for the graf spee, but not impossible. So far this has been the case, but it has been TOO difficult to be counted as a success :? We will keep on trying to improve it :)

Cheers,

Xavi

PS: Just a small note: The name of the chaos vessel will end up being Wrath Spear. I like the sound of it
