Hey everyone, I'm new to the boards but in between the time I signed up and was allowed to post on the boards I have been doing a bit of reading. There are a lot of interesting topics and it's nice to see such a friendly, helpful atmosphere on the net, rather than the usual flaming.

So anyway, I'm new to BFG... I haven't seen it played nor do I actually own any BFG material (Well some WD stuff) but I am going to start. My query is how would you rate the Vengeance Class Battle Cruiser? and what ships would you suggest I build from the Game set?

In addition, roughly how many points would 6 Cruisers, the Vengeance BC and two escort squadrons come to? as that is what I have my heart set on at the moment.

Thanks for your replies in advance ?:)

Haarken

Hi Haarken, welcome to the boards- I'm sure you'll enjoy things here..

Now BFG... A superb game- relativly simple, fast paced and great fun! I play Imperial- from the box I made a Mars, a Lunar, a Gothic and a Tyrant- this is a nice mix I found, as it provides a good set of ships capable of lots of things- if you like launch bays you could build a Dictator instead of a Lunar of course- but thats not my style; the more big guns and torpedoes the better! :D
I can't give you much advice about Chaos, but from the ships in the box I made a Carnage, a Devestation, a Slaughter and a Hades- again, a good all round mix...

The basic Vengeance is quite a good ship- decent armament etc.. the only bad things about it are IIRC its lack of frontal arc weapons and that it doesn't have an armoured prow like other Imperial vessels as it is kinda a "intemmediate stage design" vessel...

Sorry i can't give you a points estimate as I don't have my books handy, but I'm sure someone will provide one! :)

I'm not famililar with the vengence class battlecruiser. Is it one of those IMO ugly composites of chaos and imperial ships? I think they were actually Crand Cruisers. Anyway for a ball park figure take cruisers to be about 180, an escort to be about 40, your battle/grand cruiser to be about 250/300 pts. So thats 6 x 180 + 2 x 3 x 40 (I presume squadrons of 3 as they come in the blister) + 250/300 now lets see = aproximately 1550 to 1650. SO with list tinkering your looking at a 1600pt fleet I think.

Actually...all of them.

The cruisers come in a modular style, and I did NOT glue in the weapons batteries.  By instead painting a whole heap of them, and doing the same for the turrets/antennae, you can stick whichever you want onto your hulls temprarily with blu-tac type materials and hav any combination you like.

I have found this to be a very good solution, and the blu-tac is hidden so it is aestetically pleasing as well.  Thus you can have whatever you want on the day

Hope this helps

Hi, and welcome to the boards.

The average Cruiser is about 200 points (maybe a bit less), and the escorts run at about 40 each. So six cruisers and two escorts will set you back approximately 1280 points. Add a commander for 100 and that is a decent fleet.

The Vengeance is an OK vessel, but no star. It was improved by making it three shields a while ago, but it works best as a defencive vessel, and needs some support to function well. I would not recommend one for a starting fleet, and maybe a Battlecruiser would be better for a start.

As for which ships to build, there is no easy answer to that. The suggestion of playing all and tacking the weapons pallets in is a good one. Play a few games, and work out whether you prefer launch bays, lances or weapons batteries. In general, a balanced fleet will work best in Gothic, so try to vary what you build and take.

All the best.

Noooooooooo,

What you really REALLY want is an Ork fleet!!!  :;):

Okay, go Imperials if you want to.  I have never faced the Vengance, so can't give any insight on its performance.  I am in agreement to Dooglebug, though, not a very good looking ship.

This is my opinion, however.  If you like it, good for you.

Tas' advice is probably the best to follow for a new player.  As you dont know for sure what aspect of the game you will enjoy (torps, batteries, lances etc) its best to give yourself a modifiable fleet.  Blue tacking weapon bays in is perfect.

On a side note, a fleet of 1500ish points is plenty for a good game of BFG.  I rarely play anything bigger to be honest.  Any larger and it takes a lot of the day to play one game, and you start to run out of counters too  :oo

stormseer- Thanks for the reply.
Dooglebug- Thanks for the reply, yeah I think it is a Grand Cruiser and yes it is one of those ugly composite ships, but I've had my eye on it since I started looking at BFG.
Tas- Thanks for the reply, thats great advice... blu-tac... I'll have to remember that before I start painting and glueing them.
CyberShadow- Thanks for the reply and the good advice.
Shadow Hunter- Thanks for the reply, I hadnt thought about how big I wanted my games to be, but I also hadnt realised it could take so long to play it.

So umm yeah, thanks for all the good advice... now all I got to go and do is part with my hard earned cash   :(

You are very welcome. I ended up doing that with ALL my ships (Imp and Chaos) and never bothered to glue them down.  Ultimately customisable :;):

Parting with the cash isnt the hard part...I do that gleefully.  Its getting it in the first case that the hard part :D

Hello there! :D

Well, a few things:

a) welcome on board :) Nice to see new people around. I am also quite new to this game, having played only 4 games so far

b) Suggestion about starting fleet: start small. I always recommend that to new players, whatever game they are trying. A 1000 point fleet is more than enough to start and learn the basics of the game. After that you can start building up your army, but you will already know what you like/dislike about a lot of stuff, so you are less likely to buy useless 8from your point of view) ships and other stuff. A 1000 point fleet has 4-6 cruisers and a few escorts and is easy and fast to paint :) In fact most of the time you can use the ships you get in the boxed set and a few escorts more and there you go: a fleet :)

c) if you like the vengeance, take it. If a ship appeals to you is important to have it. The looks is an importantpart of the game as well, and being comfortable with how your army displays is a major issue, at least for me. Battle performace is a thing that will come later, but it is likely it will be good there none the less. :)

Health and a lot of sixes,

Xavi
