When my group of gaming friends gets together to play BFG, we often halve ship speeds and weapon ranges. This is because we are playing on a kitchen table or gaming board, one that works fine for games like Epic and BattleTech, but just seem a little cramped for BFG. Even after halving speeds and ranges, we still end up with "traffic jams" with lots of ships manoeuvring right up next to each other, because the gaming table doesn't allow us enough room to manoeuvre.
Is BFG intended for large (eg 6' x 4' or larger) tables? It seems to me that only gaming clubs and stores are able to use tables this big. IMHO, BFG would be more manageable if the ships were smaller, with shorter weapons ranges and lower ship speeds.

Yep, BFG works best on a 6x4 table. You'll still end up with jams. Just take the ships off the base or put a marker down to show where the ship actually is.
