This question came up on Dakka, and since it is relevant to my floundering Tale of (lots of) Gamers, I thought that I would ask here as well. I wont be able to add a Venerable Barge to my fleet in the near future, but if I did, which one would be the best choice? Personally, I really like the Oberon or the Emperor. However, someone did point out that the Planet Killer does count on the list... ![]() |

Both the Oberon and Emperor would be good choices. I would lean to the Emperor because you half the launch capability due to the size of Thunderhawks- harder to squeeze them into hangers etc that are designed for smaller Imperial Navy flyers. However given that you are allowed to choose from Chaos BB/GC's, I would be most tempted to go for one of them just for the novelty value of having Chaos BB in SM Fleet. And their faster speed (compared to IN BB's) would allow them to keep up with rest of SM fleet so won't get isolated. I reckon the Despoiler would be cool as a VBB, albeit a bit expensive. The Desolator would be really effective, giving the SM Fleet some relatively cheap long ranged lance fire. However it does n't have launch bays, only boarding torpedoes, so not sure if it fits my idea of VBB. However I do have a spare Desolator, so might be tempted. Ironic given the furore over the Seditio Oprimere (SP??) that they have now allowed SM access to big gun boats. Cheers James |

Thanks. I had forgotten about having to halve the launch capacity to refit to Thunderhawks. Still, I just like the Oberon as it has a bit of everything and should be able to take care of itself - a skill that becomes even more important in a Marine fleet without the range of support vessels. I already have a large Chaos fleet, and I get the feeling that a lot of people will add a Chaos ship as the Venerable. That being said, I am tempted by the Repulsive - always a favourite vessel of mine - and the Despoiler was my third choice. In the end, I will most likely just invent my own vessel, custom build it, and then I can use different stats as the wind takes me. The SO was a bit too much and I didnt like it. The option of VB does do away with the problem of balance, since it relys on previous vessels which should already be balanced. |

Where are the rules for venerable BBs laid out? I have a half converted Chaos SMBB that could fit the bill quite nicely.... |

The Marine fleet list is in Fanatic mag 5 (I think). Basically, a Marine fleet can use any Imperial of Chaos Grand Cruiser, Battle Cruiser or Battleship. There are a few restrictions, such as halving the number of launch bays to accomodate Thunderhawks, and adding a few points for a Marine crew. Interesting, as there are three Marine variant lists, but it doesnt solve the problem of only having two vessels above Escort size available in the fleet. |
