Fanatic magazine 6 arrived for me this morning.  It is a good one for BFG,
if you play a marine fleet, as the new marine fleet rules are in it :D

The 3 new fleet lists for the marines are well thought out in my opinion,
and better represent the marine fleets than the standard list available so
far.

There are several new things for the marines, Venerable Battlebarges and
Honour Guards for all 3 fleet lists, and a Fortress Monastery and
Thunderhawk Annihilators for the crusading fleet.

The Venerable Battlebarges are a welcome addition.  The fluff describes them
as unique and very rare heresy-era ships, which some later classes were
based on.  To represent them, a marine fleet can choose any Chaos or
Imperial Battleship, Grand Cruiser or Battlecruiser.  They are 0-1, and have
to pay an additional points cost to represent the marine crew.  They can
also swap their prow weapons for torpedoes.

Honour Guards are the specialist bodyguard for marine heroes (think the
Ultramarines Honour Guard in the new 40K SM Codex) that can make a special
teleport attack.  The Fortress Monastery is very similar to a Ramilies
Starfort, and the Thunderhwak Annihilator is a Fighter-Bomber variant of the
Thunderhawk.

There a 3 separate fleet lists, the Planetary Assault list (the standard
codex list), the Crusading Fleet list (suitable for crusading chapters like
the Black Templars, and space-based chapters like the Dark Angels) and the
Dominion Fleet (for chapters like the Ultramarines who rule a large domain,
and also chapters that have great influence in the region they are based).

The Planetary Assault Fleet isn't changed much from the standard list, but
the 2 new fleets differ a bit with their own  specific restrictions and plus
points.  The crusading fleet has access to the Fortress Monastery and
Thunderhawk Annihilators.  The Dominion fleet has cheaper standard
Battlebarges and Strike Cruisers and can take Imperial Navy ships using the
Reserves rules, but the marine ships don't have the special boarding, hit
and run and exterminatus special rules to represent the marine crew members
being spread more thinly over the fleet and the IN vessels under their
command.

Overall, I like it.  The rules look good and will hopefully make the marines
a bit easier to use.

On a sidenote it is also mentioned in the news section that the Terminus Est
will be released next month, and that the rules for Typhus and his
plaugefleet will be in the in Fanatic mag 7.

I'm off to buy some battleships!

Still don't like the THA. The whole "turrets hit it on 6+" thing is stupid and unfluffy. The 4+ regular save is good enough, IMO.

Sounds very interesting. I don't suppose there were any pics of FOrtress Monastaries etc?

Cheers! :)

Gothic development is strange, as whenever a new list or variant comes out, I find that I usually prefer the original fleet. This is a complete turn around of the 'got to get the latest force' syndrome. That said, thies does sound interesting and I look forward to picking up my copy. I would like to have seen a new ship for them, though.  :(

Funny you should ask that. Here's mine ?

I couldn't resist trying this at the time. It did however run away with itself and involve more work than I intended.
As a matter of interest I had a long e discussion with Matt Keefe about this subject around 18 months ago as he said they had had lots of enquiries about fortresses. He felt that the route GW would go would be to supply specs and expect people to scratchbuild them as per the ork rocs etc.

Groovy!

Hmmmm... If I can get my hands on some more Imperial weapons spures I feel tempted to try out scratchbuilding a Venerable Battlebarge and possibly a fortress monastary myself.. The BB in particular would be fun.

Cheers! :)

I thought it was an interesting article. I did n't notice until the second time I read it that the Crusade Fleet list does n't have access to Sword/Firestorm/Cobra rapid strike vesseks, just Hunter/Gladius/Nova.

Liked the idea of the venerable battlebarge- would have liked to have seen some pianted conversions of SM venerable battlebarges though!

From the background of Space Wolves/Blood Angles what fleet do you reckon would suit them best?

I am tempted to stick to the Armageddon Battlefleet list as I can still take all usual SM ships (albiet not SM venerable battlebarge) plus also some IN ships as well. I have an Apocalypse BB and some Falchion escorts. Just wish I could get hold of some Voss patten cruisers!!!
???
Cheers

Spacious Puppies AKA Space wolves: assault fleet. They control Fenris and not much more.

Vampires AKA Blood Angels: I think that the assault fleet fits them as well. I am not strong on this, though.

Actually I think that the Dominion fleet is quite specific. Few chapters have such extensive domains as those of the Ultramarines. It seems to me more a chapter specific than a real generic SM fleet. The crusading fleet, well, for those without a home planet.

Xavi

I had similar thoughts.

I will probably end up with both space puppies and vampires for BFG as I have some Space Wolves ships painted up and I wanted to do Blood Angels ships to match my Epic force.

The only thing I might do is leave the Space Wolves as per Planetary Assault list and just get enough Blood Angels ships to fit in a Battlefleet Armageddon list.

Although a Black Templars crusade list does seem appealing...

Cheers

Crusading fleet is definitely for Black Templars. And Imperial Fists as well.
