After picking up a cheap copy of the BFG rulebook I've decided to start collecting the game.

I've decided to go for an imperial and a chaos fleet. Any good advice how to build the bulk of my forces?
I was thinking of starting with the following core units:

Imperial:
Emperor class battleship
Apocalypse class Battleship
Venegance class Grand Cruiser
a couple of boxes of cruisers

Chaos:
Desolator Battleship
Planet Killer???
a couple off boxes of cruisers

These selections are purely based on the looks of the models. Also, I have no idea what to get in terms of escorts, smaller vessels and ordinance. All suggestions are more than welcome.

Cheers! :)

Hi Warmaster,
I'm no BFG expert, but I'd say:
(1) buy the models you like best
(2) buy loads of escorts, and then some more.
Item 1 keeps you happy; item 2 helps you do well.
Looking forward to see you conversions in BFG too.

Wecome to his Devine Majesty's Navy,

Inspection is at first bell and the cook will be serving hard tac and weebles after.  :D

Here is my 2 cents.  With the 8 crusiers that come with the box set here is my recommendation.

Imperial

Mars class Battlecruiser
2 Gothic Class cruiser
1 Dominator Class Cruiser

Chaos

1 Styx Class Heavy Cruiser
2 Murder Class Cruisers
1 Slaughter Class Cruiser

I agree competely with buying the models that are most fun too you.  But the game has more focuss on the line cruiser.  I have one battleship that I use only use on occasions.  I put my faith in cruisers and battlecruisers.

Did you get the box set WMN- or just the rulebook?

Anyway.. yep, I'd go with CC's list for the Chaos cruisers, but for 4 Imperial cruisers I would build 1 Mars, 1 Lunar, 1 Gothic and 1 Tyrant.

I would also reccomend at this point just to get one battleship for each fleet- my Imperial fleet is about 5000pts, and only has two battleships. I love the Apocalypse model and am not a particular fan of attack craft, so I would buy the Apocalypse if I was you!
For escorts, perhaps buy one pack of each available for the two fleets- all are good at certain tasks!
After using them through a couple of games, you'll be able to tell which you like best, and can buy a pack or two more of that type.. My favourites are Cobras in massed squadrons which can zip up to the enemy quickly and then retreat after firing off a big salvo of torpedos...

Welcome to a truly great game- I'm sure you'll like it! ?:;):

Every Imperial player needs some Swords and Cobras at their disposal. Swords are very good flank/rearguards, and are vicious little terriers against Eldar ships that stray into range. Cobras are cheap torpedo platforms with the agility to set up torpedo crossfires as the lines of battle get close. (You may want to skip the Firestorms or Falchions if you're low on funds)

The Chaos fleet tends to run Infidels for long range boarding-torpedo salvos to annoy escorts and generally soak up fighter screens, or medium-large Idolator squadrons to finish off ships the make it through the wall of battle. Most chaos fleets are cruiser-heavy, though, since the Slaughter is so cheap and plentiful.

I agree with Stormseer: You might want to make do with only one battleship, at least initially. I'd pick the Desolator and the Emperor - those are the 2 battleship classes that see the most game time. I'd love to buy an Apocalypse (beautiful ship) but it sucks to use. Similarly, the Despoiler is a nice-looking ship, but is tricky to use (works best as an assault carrier, which leaves it susceptible to Brace For Impact).

I only got the rulebook but judging from the prices in the online store it might be a good idea to buy the boxed set. After all: the cruisers alone would add up to  ?36 and for the last ?4 I get all the counters etc. I'll need. I can allways give the extra rulebook to my gaming buddy.

I think I'll buy an extra box of imperial and chaos cruisers -Nice to have a bit extra and also some stuff for converting (I was thinking of doing a couple of demonships -a Nurgle ship for ramming actions sounds particularly nasty)

For Chaos It'll be the Desolator Battleship then. Perhaps backed up by a few Infidel Raiders.

The Imperial fleet will be supported by Cobras and Swords and the Venegance class Grand cruiser. I'm still a bit indecisive about which battleship to pick though...

I was looking through the BFG section of Chubbybob's site. Gotta love those amazing conversions. I think I'll have a go with something along those lines at some point but first things first of course.

Anyway thanks for the replies.

Cheers! :)

PS: Has anybody had a look at BFG Armada yet? Is it worth getting if you won't be playing Eldar, Orks or Nids?

Welcome to a truely great game. As a first shot, you could do worse than looking here:

Basics for Gothic

In addition, my advice would be:

Start by making up the cruisers without weapons bays. Then experiment by temporarily sticking in the weapon bays to make up different combinations. Try each class of cruiser a couple of times to get a feel for the ones that you like.

Make up and paint the cruisers proper.

Get a two squadrons of Escorts for each side, the torpedo variant and one other.

This will give you a varied and balanced fleet. Then you can go about adding Grand Cruisers, Battle Cruisers, Heavy Cruisers and perhaps a Battleship.

As for Armada, it depends how much you want to get into the game. Even though you say that you are only interested in Imperial and Chaos right now, and I fairly sure that you will expand. If you have no interest in the fleets that are covered, then it is possibly not worth it. However, it does have the definitive rules for the Planet Killer, as well as new Grand Cruisers for Imperial and Chaos, the Armageddon vessels for Imperials, and variant fleet lists for both sides. I think that it is a great read on its own. Have a flick through in a GW store if you can.

Good luck, and have fun.

Doh! I'd comletely forgotten about the BFG section on this site. Thanks for the link CS. It was very helpfull.

I think I'll skip Armada for now. The SG site has lots of PDFs free for download with all sorts of extra resources. (+ the stuff you can get via various file sharing networks *cough cough* :blues: )

I've decided not to buy models for the Ordinance for now. I'm not too happpy about the SG ones and FW's are nice but expensive. Perhaps they can be scratch built???

Cheers! :)

Yeah- Great idea getting the box set- its good value for money- you won't need to build ordanance markers then either... The card ones look fine in my opinion, and building them just looks too much hassle for the results you get...

Serps- personally I don't think the Apocalypse sucks in game- admitedly I use mine less than my Retribution, but it is great as a linebreaker (locked on of course) or coupled with a Gothic or two as a Ramillies killer (or indeed any high armour orbital defences)...
You could even use it as a Victory class instead, (although its not completely official yet iirc) which has longer ranged lances which makes it a little more versatile.

Yeah, the apocalypse works OK, but I think that, in most circumstances, you're probably better off with a  couple of gothics in squadron instead. Sure, they're more fragile, but you also get 12 torps forward to clear out the front arc as you close (point blank torp salvos tend to smart). I can see the apoc as a kind of upgunned Dominator, except that, truth to tell, you're probably better off with 2 dominators for twice the nova cannon action.

I dunno, it just seems like a solution searching for a problem. I'd certainly buy one and convert it to an Oberon, though! Nice, all-rounder, that ship.

Lots of people do that.  :{

Probably a good idea. I am sure that you will come around and get it fairly soon, but it is not necessary right at the start.

Personally, I would not get the attack craft from GW/FW. When FW say five Thunderhawks, they mean 5, not five bases worth!

Instead, I use a load of attack craft from Ground Zero Games. They are really good, very cheap and come with a cool spider base for a bit extra. If you can catch them at a trade fair or a show, then you can select the designs that suit you the best and remember theproduct codes.

well my friend my friend I am also a newcomer.

Everything said here is true, but you mentioned taking a grand curiser and a battleship?

How many points are you aiming for just out of curosity.  Most games are around 2000pts or 3000pts

Well anyway

I think the fanatic models for epic make excellent ordance markers.  Just use one to represent a whole squad for imperial there are quiet a few ships to choose from.  None for choas for the time being but I am sure they will add some

Just an idea
