I just wanted some opions on this new ship design.

Battlecruiser - 280pts
hits - 8
turrets - 2
shields - 2
speed - 20cm

Torps - 6 - Front
Dorsal Lance - 2 - 30cm - L/R/F
Prow Lance - 4 - 45cm - F
Port Launch - 2 (no assault boats)
Starboard Launch - 2 (no assault boats)
Port Weapon - 6 - 30cm - L
Starboard Weapon - 6 - 30cm

I did have some pictures of the ship I'm using but I can't figure out how to add them... anyway let me know what you think.

http://www.agentsofgaming.com/ob5ea.htm

try that, it's called the olympus.  It's the 8th one down

I think that the model looks ,ore like a main battleship than a regular cruiser :) if you want to have that much weapons on the prow I would go for a BB as well. It is the only problem I see: you have too much weapons on the prow. I would go for either 4 lances (reducing the range to 30 cm, that we are talking about a cruiser, nor a monster of deep space) or 6 torps, not both. Apart from that, good one :)

Plan B would be to turn it into as battleship, but you would need to boost it if you did that. :)

Regards,

Xavi

Cheers Xavi.

The only problem with making it a BB is that it's just slightly smaller than a standard cruiser.  I think I'll just bring down the range of the prow lances.

Shame though...  :(

Hi there!

Really? That small? Wow, weird. It looks way bigger in the picture, withy 2 bases and all that. Well it is the problem of not having a reference standing by its side :)

Well, in that case and looking at the model I would suggest the following. Some changes to weaponry:

CRUISER: 8 hit points, 20 cm, turn 45, 2 shields, 2 turrets (as usual). Plan B is to give it only 6 hit points and slightly faster since it is a smaller vessel, so 25 cm would be ok, I guess.

- Prow torpedoes: strenght 6 Front

- Port and starboard lances: str 2, 30 cm (those huge tubes in the sides) Side/front. those look mobile, so I think we could make that. That would make for a really powerful frontal firepower, being able to field 6 torps and 4 lances, so they makie the ship expensive as well.

- Port and starboard launch bays. 2 bays per side

I would not give him dorsal lances, since I see nothing that could justify them. The things on the high part of the ship look like turrets and other anti-fighter stuff, not like ubber lances.

That would make for an astonishing firepower, but a weak side firepower (only 2 lances in the sides), so it will mean a new kind of ship more or less :) the imperials have nothing under battlecruiser with such frontal firepower. I like it :)

Let me know what you think about this mad idea :) Hope that helped

Health and a lot of sixes,

Xavi

I'm not a BFG player as such but my understanding of battlecruisers and battleships is that they are basically very similar beast except that Battleships focus on Armour, Guns and Speed (in that order) and Battle Cruisers focus on Speed, Guns and Armour (once again in that order).

On the page that this link -> http://www.kbismarck.com/genedata.html leads to is a table that compares the various characteristics of the Bismark (A battleship) and the Hood (A Battle Cruiser). The Hood is slightly quicker and the Bismark better armoured, the area where they are both pretty equal is in the guns with both having a main armament of eight 15" guns.

So just to relate this back to BFG, I think your BC should be slightly quicker than a BB, have a similar amount of firepower if not the same, but it's main weakness should be that it should be that has less armour and survivability. So less armour, shields or whatever it is in BFG.

Right then.

I was thinking of making it a Light Cruiser. ?It's slightly bigger so that's not a problem. ?The problem I had with that it's twice the width of a LC.

I've actually cut off the two side bits. ?It looks way better now. ?

What about dropping the dorsal lance?

I want to keep the front lances & launch bays (it looks like a carrier to me) ? I wanted to keep the front lances due to the four turrets on the front sides.

The reason for having the weapons bays is the cool looking bits near the back end. ?They kind off look like rocket launchers that you sometimes see on a heli', but I'm more than happy to see them go if needed.

Ok, basic cruiser profile

str 6 torp front
str 4 lances front - 30cm
2 sqdrns p & s
str 4 w/batt p & s - 30cm

What about that? or do you think we've come too far away from the original?

By the way you show look at some of the Minbari ships. ?They are sorted & would make good Eldar (I'm using them for a different race, but I've not got round to making rules or painting them yet)

Cheers Haarkan. ?It's only gonna have 5+ armour all round.

The problem I see is that you have a damn powerful firepower in the front. It is definitively a regular cruiser if it is twice as wide, even if itr is slightly smaller.

Let's see:

Cruiser/8, speed 20-25, turns 45, armor 5+ all around, 2 turrets, 2 shields (does it really look like it has 2 turrets?)

- 2 launch bays per side

- Weapon Bateries: Str 4 30 cm per side (those missile launchers you were talking about, because creating a side torpedo might be too much here ;)

- prow lances: 2, 30 cm
- Prow torpedoes: 4

That would be fairer IMO if you don't want a too powerful ship. But you could also go for the megafrontal weaponry: 4 lances, 6 torpedoes.

Plan C would be to turn that gap in the center of the prow into an other launch bay with 2 fighters, so the thingy becomes a 6 launch bay carrier. Really powerful stuff.

Regs,

Xavi

I actually prefer your original idea of 2 lance port & starboard which can fire front or left/right.

This is what I'm gonna try;

Cruiser/8, speed 20cm, 2 shields, 2 turrets, 5+ armour all round.

2 l/bays per side (these would be the missle launcher type things.  They kinda look like launch bays

2 lance per side - which fire front/side - 30cm.

str 6 torps.

That's it.  It would cost : 195

This would make it a cross between a Gothic & a Dictator. (it would be very powerful going forward but very weak at the sides)

In fact looking at the other ships it's almost a Devastaion.

I envision that it'a an earlier ship class or experimental...

Ok, let me know what you think Xavi, & I'll let you know how it plays.

Looks good. I like it :) Now, you should think about a bold name for it as well, both for the ship kind and the particular ship. All the ships in the Imperial Navy have one, so this one should be no exception. Keep us informed about the battlefield results!

Cheers,

xavi

PS: what about Vigilant ship class and "Hammer of Heretics" for the particular ship?

The Royal Navy have had some excellent ship names over the years should you need any Inspiration.  Examples include:

Indefatigable
Vigilance
Triumphant

It's just a suggestion but normally the first ship launched out of a new class is usually named after the class e.g.- The Leander Cruiser class, the first ship launched was the Leander. Then the ships usually have some connection with the ship class name, e.g.- Ajax and Achilles being the sister ships are also heroes from Greek mythology along with Leander. I think it's going to take me a long time to name any new ship classes, I'd be constantly thinking about what I could name the sister ships. Oh and btw Greek Heroes tends to be a theme within the Royal Navy, Ajax, Achilles, Leander, Orion, Bellepheron, Perisperone (sp?) etc...

I think it'll be a Vulcan class cruiser & it's called "Excalabur"

Not yet had a chance to try it yet...

Anyone else fancy trying it in their next games, please feel free & let me know how it plays
