Post subject:  A day of BFG....

Had a great day today, out in Saxmundham at a mates, for a mammoth session of BFG...

We played my Imperials against his Chaos, Surprise Attack on an 8' by 4' table. Michael was the defender, and his fleet included his Ramillies!! ?:o - Somewhat scary as those of you who have played against them will know!! :D

We used fleets of around 3500 pts, and he rolled up an extra 340pts worth of planetry defences, buying 3 fire ships, and some torp and lance platforms too!!
The Ramillies was placed in orbit of the planet, in the middle of the table, which was also ringed by planetry defences and loads of ships on standby... Two Slaughters were active, below the planet, closest to my chosen table edge.

I attacked from one end of the table with the Slaughters nearest, hoping to rush them, and then go at the Ramillies, and the two Despoilers docked with it (!), damaging it a bit with nova cannons and then broadsiding it in passing....

Anyway, things did not go quite to plan, as you might imagine! I split my fleet into three distinct chunks- 1). My two battleships, some swords and a Tyrant, 2). Some LCs and cobras, along with several cruisers, and 3). a final section of two cruisers and some swords and cobras....

My third section swept off left, behind an asteroid field to shield them form the Ramillies, the battleships advanced up the centre, supported by a Gothic, and the second lot went to the right, to start a bombardment of the many ships stationed around the planet....

The first turns firing was pretty pitiful, my 3 novas doing alright, but only managing to take a few shields down on the Ramillies, and cause 1pt of damage IIRC.... :L ?I also managed to destory one Slaughter that was active, and cripple the other.

On Michaels first turn, with an inspired set of dice rolling, he managed to get virtually all his fleet active, bar two cruisers and an escort squadron.... Most of his fleet then advanced towards mine, with some holding position around the planet.

The crippled Slaughter got a few shots off, and managed to destroy a Sword, with the help of a lance platform.
I seem to remember the Ramillies also did a bit of firing in this turn, but nothing too spectaculer happened.....

*********************************************

Right- more tomorow- I'm rather tired right now.........

I know its frustrating when you see all that firepower beingb wasted, but neutralising 2 cruisers is not bad going

Looking forward to more!

Right, turn two.... For me pretty uneventful.....

My section three continues round the asteroid field, staying out of sight of the Ramillies, while the two battleships, swords and a couple of cruisers continue their advance straight ahead. My second section (Cruisers and LC, as well as some Cobras speed along the flank, preparing to engage some ships in orbit around the planet. After my NCs not doing much, just damaging a cruiser a bit I think, I resolve my firing....

The crippled Slaughter is destroyed by the Tyrant and Sword squadron, and the Retribution and Apocalypse fire at the Ramillies, scoring one point of damage on the quadrant facing me.. :L , and the Gothic with them destroys a torpedo platform that was disrupting my formations....

Section 2 then fires, taking out a fire ship that was looking a bit close, and damaging a Devestation on standby.

The Cobras of section 2 then form a firing line (all 8 of them }:) ), as well as three cruisers and a Dauntless. They unleash torps at two Murders, I think, postioned to hit a defence platform next turn... They damage one and cripple another IIRC......
The Retribution launches torps at a Despoiler with some shields down from a NC hit, but they blow up in the explosions!!

-I was quite pleased with this turn, especially on the right flank.....

Michaels second turn was also good for him though-

He managed to get another cruiser active, leaving just the damaged Devestation and the escort squadron....

The two despoliers both undocked with the Ramillies, and advanced toward my battleships and the group lurking behind the asteroid field....
Most of the ships orbiting the planet got underway too, a pair of Murders coming at my ships that had just damaged them, and a couple of Styxs going toward the left flank of the battlefied....
Some firing from the cruisers, the Ramillies, and the two battleships.... The battleships damage the Apocalypse a bit, and the Ramillies damages the Gothic. A pair of Iconoclasts swoop in and cheekily destroy two of my Swords. On the right flank, the Murders blast away at my Cruisers and escorts, destroying a pair of Cobras, helped by the Ramillies firing at long range.

In the ordanance phase, some more torps are fired by various platforms, one is destroyyed by some of my torps, the Ramillies unleashes around 20-odd bombers, which fly toward my cruisers! :o
-To top it all, the Despoilers fire off assault boats and fighters, and the Styx closest fires some bombers.

The bombers  from the Ramillies stop in space, the assault boats + fighters stop right ahead of my 3rd group, and the Styx's attack the Retribution, damaging it a bit....

Lots of action that turn......!! :D

>The Cobras of section 2 then form a firing line (all 8 of them)

Lovely.  Its beautiful when the cosmic ballet reveals a solid line of torpedo tubes waiting to fire....

Onto turn three.......

Section 3 finally gets out from behind the asteroid field, section two continues their advance on the planet, and the BBs carry on toward the Ramillies and the Despoilers.....
-The Tyrant with them breaks off, and heads in the direction of group 2.....

Firing- The Cobras of secton 3 fire their torps, as does the Gothic and Dictator..... They take down some shields, and damage a Despoiler a little.. :(
The Retribution and Apocalypse fire, damaging a Styx, and a Despoiler.....

Section 3 fire at lots of stuff, destroy the damaged Devestation, and... not much else, apart from damging a cruiser that was in the way.. }:)
No other ordanance really, as my carriers had used them all, and were unable to reload due to my failing the Ld test for my first ship- the Dictator  .. Grr!!

Aha, right, thought so....

My fleet, I can tell you;

1 Retribution, 1 Apocalypse, 1 Mars, 1 Overlord, 2 Lunars, 2 Tyrants, 1 Dominator, 2 Gothics, 2 Dictators, 1 Torp Dauntless, 1 Lance Dauntless, 3 Firestorms,  Swords, 12 Cobras....

I can't remember Michael's fleet exactly, but hopefully, as he is a member of this forum , I can get him involved; posting up his turns (and his fleet list).... :D

I shall mail him later on, giving him this threads url, etc.....

Chaos turn 3: Despoilers manouvre round to face my battleships, and Styx' head in their direction too, a couple of cruisers head towards the right flank, along with a fire ship...

The Despoilers damage the Retribution, and cripple the Apocalypse with bombers, and the Ramillies destroys the Gothic it damaged earlier.....
The cruisers over on the right cause a couple of points damage on one cruiser, and the Ramillies quadrant facing that way fires long range, damaging a Dauntless....

-Not a bad turn, but not good also, especially getting my Apocalypse crippled, as it is one of the best things at damaging a Ramillies...
:L
