Hello all   been ages since I've been around these parts, I've been firmly ensconced in running a 40k campaign at my local gaming group.  After I'm finished with this I'm looking at doing a BFG Chaos Fleet, if only to do something that's quicker than a full 40k army (been painting it almost a full year and a half, and barely half-way through it! :sus: )

So here's the list I'm looking at doing, I've designed it to reflect some of the background of my 40k Chaos army, in so much as it's mainly undivided with support from Khornate & Nurgle units.

Also, one of the concepts is that this fleet is quite an opportunistic, almost piratical fleet, laying hidden and launching surprise attacks agains merchant or Naval patrols.  In their back story, the army originates from a Company of Space Marines that was lost in a Warp Storm, with it two Strike Cruisers.  Over time they have increased their fleet through recruiting pr subduing various cultists or bands of pirates, or more recently by capturing Imperial Vessels (including a Dominator and a Dictator class cruisers).

So any way, here's the fleet:

Devestation Class Cruiser (w/Warmaster Ld 9)- 290 Points
Devestation Class Cruiser - 190 Points
Murder Class Cruiser (w/Lord & Mark of Nurgle)- 265 Points
Slaughter Class Cruiser (w/Lord & Mark of Khorne) - 235 Points
7x Infidel Raiders - 280 Points
8x Iconoclast Destroyers - 240 Points
Total: 1,500 Points

What I'm thinking with this is lots of escorts (representing captured merchant craft or inducted pirate vessels) harass the enemy vessels while the two Devestations launch waves of bombers and boarding craft, the Murder pounds the enemy from a distance, and the Slaughter gets up close to attempt boarding actions (well, it's crewed by Khorne worshippers!).

Any feedback or suggestions for this fleet are welcome.

Thanks for looking!

It seems to have several commanders in it? I don't play chaos much or against them so i don't really know how viable this is. (Being a Tau player myself!!)

However i like the balance of this fleet. The 4 cruisers can form a viable centre and provide some cover for your escrorts. It should work well with your attack craft from the dictators supporting your Slaughter and Murder class cruisers.

May i ask how you plan to squadron your escort vessels?

A hmm and a hmm.

First I like your fluff build background. The escort theme fits in. But then you have 2 Devastations to give your fleet a solid ordnance core which is good but I don't see it as fluffy in this fleet.

Playwise your missing out on Chaos. I do like escorts a lot but I think you have too many.

The single slaughter does work good as a shepherd to the little escorts. The single Murder is so-so.

I would have troubles using the strengths in this fleet.

Aside from fluff I view Chaos in two options. I) The Broadside Beast and II) The Frontal Assault.

I) As a core to this fleet you have 2 Devastations and 2 Carnages. 2 ships that benefit from going on an abeam course dishing out from afar with there long range broadides. There is probably no fleet more effective in the 45-60cm range than this. Under 45cm the Carnages extend some more.
A Desolator BB is a great addition to this fleet. As escorts Infidels and then Iconoclasts,

II) As a core you have 2 Murders a Hades and a Styx. In the front arc that is 10 lances at 60cm! Ding ding ding.

Slaughter pairs work great in both fleets when the distance is close.

Now my own fleet is nowhere near those 2 options! haha.

Fluff for the win but I like pointing out Chaos strengths.

In your fleet I say that I would drop some escorts and gain another Murder or Carnage.

Thanks for your comments guys

@ Antonius, I would go for smaller clusters of 3-4 escorts (possibly mixed), a couple spearheading a frontal assault with the Slaughter, others serving as a 'screen' for the other vessels, as I see fit.

@ Blackhorizon, thanks for your advice - it seems that BFG, like every other game, suffers from that 'competitiveness v fluff' quandry that so many other games have.  I was looking through the Chaos fleet again yesterday, and although I think one of this fleet's weaknesses is lack of lance weapons, it is a tear for me to choose between being nasty & effective with staying true to the fluff of my Chaos army!  :))

However, I can really see your point about replacing some of the escorts with another Cruiser, as you suggest a Murder or Carnage.

I'll have a tinker with the list and post again with the results...

Ah yes, but it is natural: you have competitive players and fun players. And every game has an option for both.

So I tend to give advice on what is effective, since that is being honest, but I prefer fun because it is cool.

On your fleet:
2 Devastations
a Slaughter and a Murder.

That's a good number of lances to me. So there doesn't seem to be a problem.

edit:

Happy Birthday!  :)

Go for fluff my friend i've not reviewed the chaos fleet much. However i do think it would be great fun to play a Chaos fleet with a nice mix of lances and weapons. Like you seem to have.

Those two ordnance cruisers hanging back providing long range covering fire... Sowing Chaos (excuse the pun) and allowing your big gun cruisers to close. The escorts and cruisers pulling alongside and engaging the biggest most nasty target.

LOL... i'd lose everytime if i played chaos, i tend to embrace fluff far too much (I regularly cause gasps in my opponents with Mont'ka Tau in 40K, and also hopefully BFG)

Happy birthday btw.

Thanks for the Birthday Wishes!  :))

I've decided to drop 2 Infidels and 3 Iconoclasts, and take another Murder.  Another good thing about this is I've now less models to paint

Warmaster 9 or the Ld+2 in the 13th Black Crusade + 1 Re-roll (either MoS or the purchasable re-roll in the 13th Black Crusade since he will be in the squadron with AC) 125
Squadron 1
Styx 275
Devastations x 2 380

Squadron 2
Hades 200
Murders x 3 510

1490 points. A goodly mix of weapon batteries, lances and launch bays. RO Squadron 1 always and LO squadron 2 always. Forget BFI. Just keep firing and firing.

Then you go completely against the spirit in which F40k was creating his fleet.  :upside:

Why are you using Murder's instead of Carnage class Cruisers?

Also if you are worried about lances then the Chaos have a good lance carrying escort that also has FP 2 Weapons batteries that don't suffer the right shift on the table.

Horizon:

Against his spirit, yes but only with the Escorts. The fleet can still be played as a raider fleet of sorts especially since it came out after being lost in a warp storm.

Antonius:

Not sure if you're asking me or the OP but if it's me, I like all those lances firing forward. Gives me great first strike capabilities for at least 2 turns. Lock on the squadron and watch Str 10 60 cm lances firing forward wreck one ship, even cripple it. Get the squadron in your opponent's fleet and then watch FP40 WB on each side, again on LO, wreck a few more ships and if there's a target in front, all the better.

Carnages are better for most but I like to Murder.  :vD
