Well, what do you think?

I didn't really want to post this, as for me I make the most of them.

The Ork fighterbombers, to put it bluntly, are crap.  D3 attacks is simply not enough, even against many escorts.  So I personally launch (crap) loads of assault boats.  These go after enemy escorts, as Ork escorts aren't manouverable enough to deal with them themselves.  After the usual turret fire, you only need a 2+ to destroy the escorts.

Now for a fleet of two terrors and a hammer (what I take) thats 9 + D3 assault boats (between 10 - 12)  split into waves of two (against escorts, usually only one dies) thats around 5 dead escorts.  Just from ordnance.  This seems very powerful, and I admit to making the most of it.  

In the first couple of turns, I hold my fleet back, unloading as many of these as I can and sending them forwards.  I knock out the escorts first, and any left over try and reduce the effectiveness of the enemy cruisers.

Now I know that fighters will reduce the effectiveness, naturally.  But at a low points cost (like the 600/700/1000point games we're playing in the campaign) there aren't many carriers to deal with my thrreat.

Of coarse this pleases me (I'm winning after all) but I do feel ashamed sometimes.  Hang on, I'm an Ork player....No I dont!  :angry:

Do you think they need...modifying...for use against escorts?

How are you playing the rules for bombers v escorts? We state that you must nominate a number of craft against each escort ship. So, a squadron of 6 bomber wings could hit in pairs against two escorts, then we just roll as normal?

You also have to remember that 10-13 wings in a 600 point fleet is a lot, and not typical. Normally, in a chaos fleet I would be lucky to get 6 wings in the fleet.

I have found that bombers are often not worth sending against escorts. They are not reliable and it takes a lot to guarantee a kill.

I didn't follow your example there.

Ork fighter/bombers only get D3 Attacks.  This means on average your not gonna do any damage, even against escorts.  A lot of escorts have two turrets, so you have to roll a 5 or 6 to get one hit.  You then have to roll equal to thier lowest armour, usually another 5.  This is just too hard for ork bombers.  Of coarse you have to survive the turret fire first too.  All in all, It would probably take 4+ stands of ork fighter bombers to deal with escorts.

Whereas the assault boats are totally the opposite.  A wave of two stands should have one survive, and then you only need to roll a 2+.

For Orks the assault boats are faster too.

Now, to me this seems like both are at the extremes of the scale.  The fighter bombers are crap, the assault boats ace. (And I use this to my advantage).

I was just wondering if they need looking at.  Against Cruisers etc, they're okay since they only cause a critical hit, and only up to a max of 6.  Usually this does no more than knock a weapon system off line.  Against escorts though, destruction.

I will continue to use as many carriers as possible, and churn out loads of these.  It'd be silly not to.  And wins me the games. (well, the bombardment cannon helps too  :;):  :D   )

I am not completely familiar with Orks, but it does sound like there is an imbalance. I would guess that the Ork Fighter/Bombers needed looking. Other races (as far as I know) do fine and it works out about right.
