Post subject:  I find myself at the head of a Tau fleet

As the proud owner of a new Tau fleet (not built yet), I've been digging around the forums and I see that there are two generally accepted fleet lists, the FW version and the SG version.

So what are the differences between the two, or should I say, what are the nuances that each provide to the Tau.

And BH, I've been reading up on your project and it does look very interesting. However, I only purchased two Protectors, so I'll have to look into that a little later.

Cheers,

Welcome to the Greater Good in Space!

Use the Forgeworld list (available at their site). Although it has never been declared official it is the most used list. Tournies accept it as well (as far as I know).

The difference between both? Tricky. I think the SG list has more flavour (Integrated Tracking System, Custodian design) but a horrible fleet selection method.

I have a good win record with the FW list. I like playing the fleet.

But no matter what list you play Protectors and Castellans are core essentials.

Project Distant Darkness,
thanks for the interest. Storywise these rules are used next to the Forgeworld ones. So they do not replace the FW ones. See it as a Battlefleet Armageddon next to a Battlefleet Gothic. Or even better, AdMech next to Imperial Navy.

Most scenarios are playable with 2 Protectors.

Many thanx BH!

Is the fleet structure the major reason for switching to the FW list or is it because it fits the models better?

It seemed a couple of years ago, that a fair number of player were comfortable using FW minis and the SG list. I'm not advocating either way, but the two Explorer/two Hero list seemed somewhat reasonable and could be effective. Did it end up being OTT or did people not like playing against a model of the US Navy?

Are there any qualms with using the SG list from an opponent's perspective?

Heh, I misinterpreted your question. You asked between FW list and SG Armada book list. I tought you meant the SG list that was made and removed! for the FW models.

In that case the SG Armada list is fine for the metal models. Yes. And the FW models for the resin models.

And indeed, many allow you to use FW models to represent the SG list.

No real qualms. Many people like the 'US Navy Carrier approach'

Ah, sorry for the confusion, I imagine that happens with too many lists.

BTW, I saw a picture of one of your Custodians for the Gothic painting contest and, well... :wow:  :wow:  :wow: EXTREMELY impressive looking.

Do you have a link to pictures of the rest of your fleet? Your scheme is so complementary of the lines of the craft themselves, that I am seriously considering adopting your scheme, though possibly with Hawk Turquoise as the contrasting color.
