On ork fleets

In the fluff ork fleets are one of those:

1.  Invasion fleets, with countless vessels of incredible variation between the. They can be severely punished as they approach the planet (as was the case with the Armaggeddon campaign) but their sheer numbers awarded them passage and/or victory in the end. Some big ships, but the variance in ship design and origin is very varied. The reports tend to point out that even the destruction of dozens of the ships do not slow down the orks. Sometimes a hulk or 2 are reported, or some extremely large ships

2.  Ambush fleets compose the second group of ork contacts. They operate with a few ships jumping to the fore and slaughtering the hapless victims. The said hapless victims are generally cargo ships and escorts at most, and they tend to be surprised and piked piecemeal, with the orks shrugging off damage that would have crippled much bigger ships.

3.  The third and last large group of ork fleet is rok fleets. Thiose are the equivalent of ork system defences and may include almost any number of roks. Usually they are tended by only a few other ?proper? ork ships

Now, how we can represent this in a battlefield?

IMO this smells of 3 kinds of diverse fleets.

The type 1 fleets should include as many ships as possible to correspond with the fluff. That means using almost all your ship models using escort stats. Yes, even gorbag?s revenge would have escort (bruite ramship) stats under this system. You can cause massive amounts of damage to the orks, but they will keep coming. IMO the best way to represent this would be to use 35-50 ork ramships and only a few of the other ships to represent the really massive vessels. A hulk might be appropriate as well.

This gives the fleet the ?massive invasion fleet that shrugs out casualties with contempt? feeling.

Type 2 fleets, on the contrary would contain few escorts, and be composed mostly of cruisers. An ork cruiser is quite capable in an ambush situation, and adds an edge vs regular enemy escorts (regular enemies with trade routes being chaos imps and tau)

Type 3 fleets would be composed of 12-20 roks and a few escorts and cruiser-level ships. Maybe a hulk. That can be an interesting match to play as well.

All these 3 fleets sound extremely orkish to me, and given the diverse situations where they are found, seem appropriate AND would seem to pose a challenge to the enemy depending on the situation. They are fluffy. At least on paper IMO. I will have to see if this is really effective or just plain silliness. And if it is, it will still be worth a laugh!! ;) xD

Just some random musings from a greenskin in training.

Cheers,

Xavi

Quite neat ideas.

Once again: you really should develop something into an article (for Warp Rift). Your ideas (this one, Power of the Moon) are really strong.

Thanks for the criticism. My main problem is that I am a lazy cad and that I am juggling with so many things at once most of the time that I do not have proper time to finish an article. I have had my escenario about the river plate battle sitting in ages in my laptop without finishing it yet. There is a small issue with the ship itself that I would like to playtest, but I do not seem to find the time to do so.

Now, let's see my current "focus" list:

- Read a rough assembly of around 50 books. Read 6 in the last 3 weeks, so thing progressing steadyly.

- Assemble and paint my late republican/marian roman army for DBA.

- Finish my article on combat for the Ars Magica RPG. A simpligfied look at combat to make it better metagame-wise. Needs introduction and wrap up to turn the rules into a proper article.

- Finish the Hunt for the Grave Spear (battle of the Silver Nebula) for BFG. Need some finishing playtest and an introduction

- article on gaming philosophy based on my Power of the Moon fleet for BFG. Nonexistant as of yet.

- New option for an article on ork fleets for BFG (not strongly thought about yet)

- Article on roman military history mixed with gaming tactics for DBA. Nonexistant as of yet.

Not bad considering that I do not have a word processor at home.... In a week time everything should be packed and ready to go to the publishers. ROFLMAO!! ?:p ? I wish

Xavi

Remember that, if you need some playtesting, can help you again (if you need more playtesting with the Grave Spear just tell us! We did play several games with the original ship, so we can play some more... although you should tell us the exact model, i still don't know which ship purchase to represent the Grave Spear. Also, could i use albion rising's papermodels for the imperial units?)

well, it seems I will be going to Valencia once every 2 weeks or so during the following months, so we might do the playtest together ;)
