What did the ether cannon do in the original article? (didn't it reduce armour values or something?)

Anyway, why doesn't it just have one simple affect/rule? Say D6 shields are down for each shot, if the score beats the number of shields that are up a point of damage is caused aswell. (there is nothing horribly 'wrong' with auto damage, it's just powerfull!)

the original ether cannon was almost exactly the same.  It was a D6 against shield value, roll less causes a point of damage, roll equal or greater knocks down shields and causes a point of damage.

I made the seperate "roll equal and knock down shields only" because I did not like the ability to auto-kill escorts mainly.

Well my suggestion doesn't have auto kill escorts (unless they have no shields!). It's also simplier and leaves the basic mechanic! (besides they can always brace!:;): )
