Idea for future Tobari weapon:

Ripper ship (Corvette- i.e. something impaler/manta sized)
Ripper ships are automated deconstructor vessels. Launched at enemy vessels, they then latch on to the hull and proceed to tear it apart. Turrets will only destroy it on a 6. Once latched on, acts as a Fire critical, except two successful damage control checks in the same phase are needed to dislodge it. Fighters may attempt to remove it (it's resilient like all corvettes), and ships in base contact may attempt to shoot it off the hull (normal turret attacks). A ship destroyed by Rippers does not roll on the catastrophic damage table, it becomes a drifting hulk.

Nice idea Magus (can I call you that?). Has merit in a way.

Like Xisor said, maybe not much fluff on them from what they are, but from an Imperial/Tau/Merchant point of view. You know being harassed by aliens and such.

I think I'll give it a try in that direction.

Also: edited first post to update the 'list'.

Remember the old Spce Fleet imperial model with claws up front - can't remember its name - would be a great addition. :D
Nice models too! I like these people - scrap - yum! :D

These models look great! I'll get back to you on stats. But I think the smaller escort should have 5+ armour and the larger one 6+!

Cheers,

Ray, the armour values seem okay. I will edit them. Looking at the models I'll give them only 1 turret.

Thanks for the compliments. But 10 each? :O  I first have to build up to 10 for myself (5 each). Most likely appearances will differ a little between models.

But if you transfer me lots and lots of money I can start building more (the same) and challenge GW hahahaha :p

The Testimony of Inquisitor Lord Revic to the Forum of Ansamas

An old man approached the brass etched pulpit, ascending the stairs to inner section. Struggling to stand, he coughed, clearing his throat, leaning on his staff, he begun.

?Long after I departed with Dregan and his Tarellian band, I received word that my acquaintance within the Thurm brotherhood, Akrhan Phyllokk, had successfully returned to his kin, in the vicinity of Pech. Unfortunately he was unable, though I suspect unwilling, to take me any further on my journey to Condeh Khar. The subject of the Tobari was a troubled one it would seem, and he was unforthcoming except to wish me fortune and prosperity in such a dangerous endeavour.

?As we journeyed, we were waylaid many times, once only just escaping a confederation of alien pirates that boarded as far as the command core of the Tarellian carrack. Fortunately Dregan?s  warriors retaliated with sufficient swiftness to prevent the carrack from being totally overrun. On the borders of Berelan Space we encountered the drifting hulks of a dozen smaller starships that, according to Dregan, were left as a result of an apocalyptic war between two of the minor races fleets in the near area.

?Soon we arrived at the Caredlio Portal, a gap in the obscuring dust clouds that border the Khareshi expanse. There we allowed some of the crew to leave, through their choice, and we continued north-eastward through the portal. After seventeen months within the expanse, we discovered on of the reputed hulk sites. An aeon old graveyard, the twisted and stripped hulks spiralling through the void in the expanse, appearing derelict and abandoned over the ages.

?At that point, unknown to ourselves, the expanse was not dead. Deep within the slowly arcing hulks energy signatures appeared, many. Within scant moments the expanse was alive with signatures.? Revic winced momentarily, recoiling from some distant memory it seemed.

He let his staff fall, grasping the rail, he steadied himself. ?They took the ship, and the crew. I saw no more of Dregan in all my voyages since. I will not say how I escaped the expanse, suffice to say that it was at extreme cost.? A deep, distant whirring sounded from Revic, he raised his arm and pondered his coppered and bronzed forearm, glinting with the hint of ancient polish, dulled over the decades. ?I was compensated, and my objective achieved, but I now know why Akrhan Phyllokk spoke with such foreboding pessimism of the expanse. Truly, he was wise beyond his years to be sceptical of that place. Until such a time, as the Imperium is able to act in force to quarantine the region, if even such a thing is now possible, then I foremost speak for the immediate return of all Imperial agents within the one hundred light year of the locale??

Wow. Speechless. That's a great! However I don't know what the Tobari do with the crew as they started out as scrap hunters. But it adds mystery wich is good. Maybe the crew is working in some old factory hulks now....

Looks like the Tobari are devloping into an interesting little Privateer Race. Cool.

Me neither![Ref: The Crew] My Revic character seems to be fitting in to almost all the developments I've been doing recently. For the crew, who really knows whats happened to them. Maybe they were simply 'kept'(shelved/bottled/pickled/put in for medical research), maybe they were tortured and brutalised, maybe they were simply dispatched to a far region of the galaxy, maybe they were integrated into the Tobari ship's systems to form part of the ship...who knows?

I think it's things like that we need to keep very 'uncertain' to keep the race viable as a 'minor' race. Any more and we end up with Demiurg/Kroot/Tau/Dark Eldar level of 'importance' IMO, as long as we keep it small and relatively obscure it should work fine.

In that respect, perhaps we should look at keeping them relatively 'normal'(ie within current rules conventions: eg Disruptors~Bombardment Cannons) and they'd stand a better chance of being adopted, then again, if it takes a bit of complexity to make it work... I'll take it.

Disruptors & Advanced Teleport stay as I see them working in concert. They are Tobari Raiders because of that!

I just kitbashed some vessels I liked the look of, but the Privateer PDF made things possible. The Tobari aren't meant to be for big BFG battles (maybe going along a Rogue Trader as a standard Xenos vessel), they belong in the small battles of Privateer.

Indeed, more fluff isn't needed. Now wait on Rays comment on the stats.
I'll write a short introduction about Tobari. Your story. The 2 escorts + special rules. A little fleet 'list'. And then there's a nice article for WR.

See it as a part 1. In the future there's always room for expansion like including cruisers and such. The best thing is the vessels can be build really easy on the Chaos backpack hull, they don't have to look the same.

Now that you mention it, it looks frighteningly similar to a Reaver ship. Its just since its not painted in blood, but instead in the color of the derelicts of the Homeworld universe, those are what sprang to mind.

Funny, I never saw the movie or the Firefly series.

Did not mean to imply you copied it or anything, just that it reminded me of it.

The only changes from the current list (in the first post) would be to make the light escorts WB front only! Drop the shields on the hvy raider to 2 (it has 6+ armour afterall!) and possibly drop it to 25cm speed (with the light one still at 35cm).

As they are so fast, 2 shields aren't really needed, it should be 1 on both IMO. (but it depends on how good you want them to be!)

If they were slower I could understand the need for the 2 shields.

I'll comment on points when you finish the stats.

Cheers,

RayB
